Indian Institute of Management is generally the first choice of anyone planning to go into this field. However, it will be wrong to say that all IIMs are equal. Basically, they can be divided into 5 categories.
IIM Ahmadabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta hold the top positions in the list. IIM Lucknow comes next followed by IIM Kozhikode. The former is generally compared with Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi and Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur. IIMK is seen at par with institutes like SPJain, NITIE, IIFT and MDI.
The 4th category includes the new IIMs and IIM Shillong. These are compared with institutes like SIBM, IIT B (Ops) and NM. Although promising, they will take a little more time to make a mark in the management world. The fifth category comprises of the most recent IIMs.
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade or IIFT has certainly earned a very special place for itself in the management sector. Some of the recruiters who come looking for talent in this institute are JP Morgan, Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Google. Premier trade companies like Bunge Limited, Archer Daniels Midland, Dreyfus Company and Cargill Louis also visit IIFT. A number of alumnus of the institute hold top positions in reputed organisations thus proving that IIFT is definitely a brand you would like to be associated with.
IIFT can be considered at par with the third category of IIMs, namely IIM KI. Hope this will help you decide which institute to go for.
All the best.
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade is a B School under the Ministry of Commerce and offers a MBA degree in International Business. Indian Institute of Managements are under the MHRD and offer a Diploma in Management.
IIFT as the name suggests specialises in Foreign Trade and s unmatched Worldwide for its supremacy in Trade. Apart from trade IIFT is known for Finance and of late it has managed to do considerably well in Marketing as well.
IIMs on the other hand have a different rigour and teaching methodology which makes it unique in its own way. I would like some of my IIM Friends to provide a greater insight on this.
