The Government recruit candidates for the engineering positions on the basis score in IES Exam. For this, the UPSC conducts IES in various centers across the country. The Commission conducts the examination for filling a total of 581 vacant posts. The UPSC conducts the examination in three stages of the Preliminary exam, Mains and Personality test. The prelims comprise of two papers General Paper 1 and Paper II. Paper I deals with General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Test comprising of objective questions from different sections of engineering. On the other hand, Paper 2 consists of Technical paper containing passages, mathematics, and logic. Now the prelims are done, and the next stage is the Main Examination. Consequently, we are presenting a quick analysis of the entire paper, here, by experts. The matter below covers a good idea of what can be the expected cut-off for getting to the next level.

Difficulty Level

As per the feedback received by candidates appearing for the exam, the questions were quite lengthy and tough. As per Ananya, one of the IES aspirants from Delhi, “The authorities asked lengthy and quite tricky questions. You can easily find this if you compare these to the questions of the previous year papers.” Talking about the type of questions asked, she further stated, “The paper I comprised of fewer questions on current affairs. These added to hardly three questions that were also very old. As for paper II, it comprised more questions which were tougher to solve.”

The paper of IES exam consists of English, mathematics, and Logic. However, the paper this time comprised more questions from Mathematics. Paper 2 of mechanical were moderately tough and more concept based. States Ashish Kumar, another candidate who appeared for the exam through Delhi, “The questions were more concept based. The calculation was tougher and time-consuming. Thus, this made it difficult to score marks. Many of the questions were calculation based.”

What is the Expected Cut-off?

Seeing the difficulty level of the questions, one expects the cut-off for the general category to remain around 70. Dr. M Rahman, head of Rahman’s Gurukool in Patna, opined this. “After the overall analysis, we found the questions as more advanced and the difficulty level as moderate. Paper one of GS paper consisted of questions from Environmental Science,” he further added.
