Many students have a fear of English subjects and scoring low in it no matter how much they work on it. This fear might be based on their previous scores in the subject where they might not have been able to secure good marks in English which made them wary of the subject and discouraged about ever being able to score good enough marks in the language.
Books To Study From – In class 9th, there are mainly 2 books to study from, one is the main course book which is named – “Beehive” and the other is the supplementary reader named – “Moment Supplementary Reader”. You can also use the NCERT Class 9 English Book PDF to refer to the book.
In order to score high marks in English subject in class 9th, follow these TIPS –
- Refer to the NCERT books – The best way to prepare for English is to focus on the books that are provided by NCERT as they have been designed strictly keeping in mind the guidelines and curriculum laid down by CBSE.
- Read the chapters thoroughly and completely – One of the keys to scoring a high number of marks in class 9th English is to rely on what’s written in the chapters and to read and understand the full lesson thoroughly.
Students should keep their focus on understanding the plot of the story, understand the characters and their characteristics, and try to learn key points in the story which could help a lot in framing the answers while writing the exam.
- Understand the meanings of the words you don’t understand – English, being a language, there are bound to be many words in the lessons, meanings of whom you don’t know, but instead of ignoring them it’s important not to hesitate and to either ask your teacher for the meaning or refer to the dictionary, because it will enhance your vocabulary, in turn, improving the quality of your answers. Understanding the meaning of some tough words is also pivotal if those words are important in the context of the chapter, and if you skip them, it might be possible that you would have trouble understanding the entire lesson.
- Focus on understanding every stanza of poetries – Poetries might be tricky for some of the students to understand, but once understood, the questions based on the poetry are quite easy to answer. It is important to grab the essence of the poem and what the poet is trying to say via the poem. It is very important to focus on the explanation of the poem when the teacher explains it in your class and to ask the meaning of a stanza you were not able to understand as it might go a long way in your understanding of the poetry.
Another important point is to learn the name of the poet of the poems as often a Reference to Context (RTC) is asked in the exam with a stanza of the poem and questions following the stanza and many times the name of the author is also asked in the questions, so it’s better to be safe than to be sorry.
- Learn how to answer questions by Exercise Questions – Never try to mug up the answers in the English exam, it is important to understand and grab the essence of the lesson or poetry so that you can answer the questions in your own words.
Answering the exercise questions provided at the end of the lesson or poetry will help you in gauging if you understood the chapter completely or not, or if you are able to answer the question in your own words.
- Focus on sentence building and improving your grammar – If in the past years you have lost a lot of marks doing grammatical mistakes or if you have trouble making grammatically correct sentences, you should focus on improving your grammar by buying a grammar practice book and learning all the basic rules of grammar and trying to use them to write without grammatical mistakes or minimal mistakes.
- Write down summaries and important plots of lessons – After reading the chapter, make it a habit to write down the summary of the lesson and write down the key points that can be asked from the lessons which will help a lot in quick revision in exam time. By just looking at the summary you will be able to recall what the plot of the lesson was.
- Revise all chapters properly – When done with the syllabus, it is important to keep revising all the chapters again and reading each chapter as many times as possible so that you are thorough with each chapter with ease. Reading the chapters again will settle the plot and important points in your memory and you will be able to remember them far more easily and quickly in the exam. Above mentioned step of writing summaries and key points of the chapters will also help you a lot in revising the chapter with ease in exam time.
- Solve Past year Papers to improve speed – English papers are generally lengthy, and many students are unable to answer the full paper. Thus, devising a strategy of which section to attempt becomes important in order to score maximum marks. Solving past year papers helps a lot in this respect, as you get an idea of how to pace your writing in order to finish the exam in optimum time and not leave any questions due to less time available.
- Try to develop a habit of reading books – Developing the habit of book reading is beneficial as it improves your grammar and vocabulary drastically and also improves your reading speed which further helps in reading questions quickly and thus helps in finishing the exam in time. Students can start off with fiction novels and read books in the genre of their choice to ease the process of habit setting.
