CAT or Common Admission Test is a management entrance exam which is the gateway to do MBA from prestigious IIMs and other top B schools. It is the hardest MBA entrance test in India. CAT leads entry to more than five thousand seats in all the twenty IIMs including IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow. Three marks are awarded to a candidate for every right answer and one mark is deducted for each wrong answer. IIMs release mock test and a guide exactly one month before CAT Exam date. Anyone who has completed bachelor’s degree with fifty per cent marks or a professional degree like CA/CS/ICWA or is in the final year of bachelor’s degree is eligible to appear in CAT exam. There is a relaxation of five per cent in graduation marks for SC, ST category and PWD candidates. There is no age limit to apply and appear for CAT exam.
Almost two lakh MBA aspirants appear for the CAT examination every year. It has a success rate of one in two-hundred. The minimum marks required to qualify the exam varies upon the relative difficulty level of that particular section compared to other sections of the test. It also varies mostly on basis of performance of the candidates who appear for the examination in that year. A candidate has to secure a minimum total cut off of the entire paper to earn GD/PI calls from IIMs. Those who clear the sectional cut-offs, as well as the overall cut-offs in the written test, are called for the GD/PI round. This is the final step of the selection-process of CAT. It has been observed from years that different IIMs use different cut-offs to offer calls to selected candidates.
