About Geological Engineering

Definition

“The geologist takes up the history of the earth at the point where the archaeologist leaves it, and carries it further back into remote antiquity.” ~Bal Gangadhar Tilak

Geological engineers integrate two disciplines: geology and engineering. Geologists study the Earth, its composition, structure, history, past plant and animal life. Engineers apply scientific knowledge and experience to design and analyze systems for the benefit of mankind. Geological engineering involves designing structures and solving problems related to earth and its resources.

Geological engineering involves geology, civil engineering, and fields such as mining, forestry and geography. These engineers apply earth sciences to human problems. Geological engineers investigate things that are part of or are made to be part of the earth, including roads, mines and quarries, dams, petroleum production, railways, building projects, pipelines, and forestry operations. Different branches of geology are structural geology, geological engineering, mineralogy, planetology, geomorphology etc.
