About Statistics

Definition

Statistics: the only science that enables different experts using the same figures to draw different conclusion. ~Evan Esar

Statistics is a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. The two main statistical methods used in data analysis are:

Descriptive statistics: One which summarizes the data from a sample using indexes such as the mean or standard deviation.
Inferential statistics: One which draws conclusions from data that are subjected to random variation (e.g., observational errors, sampling variation).

Statistics Role Models

CR Rao

CR Rao- Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, known as C R Rao is an Indian-born, naturalized American, mathematician, and statistician. He was awarded the Guy Medal in Gold (2011) of the Royal Statistical Society. He was also awarded the India Science Award, 2010 (the highest award in a scientific field presented by the government of India). He even won the International Mahalanobis Prize (2003) of the International Statistical Institute. Rao has received 38 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in 19 countries around the world and numerous awards and medals for his contributions to statistics and science. He is a member of eight National Academies in India, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy. Rao was awarded the United States National Medal of Science, that nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research, in June 2002. He was given the India Science Award in 2010, the highest honour conferred by the government of India in scientific domain. In 2013, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Raj Chandra Bose

Raj Chandra Bose- He was an Indian American mathematician and statistician best known for his work in design theory, finite geometry and the theory of error-correcting codes in which the class of BCH codes is partly named after him. He also invented the notions of partial geometry, strongly regular graph and started a systematic study of difference sets to construct symmetric block designs. Bose's course changed in December 1932 when P. C. Mahalanobis, director of the new (1931) Indian Statistical Institute, offered Bose a part-time job. Mahalanobis had seen Bose's geometrical work and wanted him to work on statistics.
