GRE and TOEFL are standardized exams which test your aptitude and your ability to communicate effectively. Indian students are exposed to rigorous examination and stiff competition throughout their academic lives. Therefore, as an Indian student, it is more likely, you will need to put more effort in into preparing for the verbal section. The topics in the Quant section are similar to the High School math, though the questions are tricky.

Even if there are students who are comfortable with English than math, the trick to scoring high on GRE and TOEFL or any other exam is to capitalize on what you’re good at and work to improve on what you’re not good at.

Practicing a set of 20 questions and reflecting on your mistakes and how it could be made right can help you score higher in the verbal section. GRE and TOEFL both give weight to English grammar and vocabulary which calls for regular practice and working on your English skills if you wish to score high on either or both exams. A combination of 325+ score in GRE and 105+ score in TOEFL is a good score to increase your chance of admission.

You can read the following books to improve your English skills:

  • WORD POWER MADE EASY BY NORMAN LEWIS

It provides passages and roots of words which will help you improve your vocabulary and perform well in the verbal section.

  • WREN AND MARTIN

It is the book you should read to improve your grammar.

  • VOCABULARY LEARNING TECHNIQUE (VOLT)

It is not a book, but an application designed by an IIT and IIM alumni. It contains pictorial representations of words, synonyms, and antonyms of every word and their use in a sentence, pronunciation of every word etc.

Now moving on to the Quant section, there are various books available which will help you practice:

  • RD SHARMA
  • ETS OFFICIAL GUIDE
  • GRE MANHATTAN PREP GUIDE
  • BARRON’S GRE GUIDE

For better practice, you can gain access to Manhattan online tests. For that, you will need to buy at least one of the strategy books, and it cannot be borrowed because you will have to email your purchase receipt to the Manhattan Support Team to receive the tests on your account. If you want to save money you can buy a Kindle edition of any of the guides on Amazon India.

To prepare for AWA, The Manhattan AWA Strategy Guide can be effective. You should also practice for GRE Reading Comprehensions beforehand. The passages are long and combined with tough language can be dreadful.

Writing is one of my crafts that I love to indulge in. Like to write on myriad of topics - politics, travelling, food, economy, culture. Education also being close to me, I therefore have chosen EduGorilla to exhibit this skill through it. Would love to hear back from you. less
