Has this ever happened to you? You were eagerly waiting for a movie to get released, expecting it to live up to the expectation you built while

watching the trailer and suddenly when it gets released, you’ve got just one thing to say ‘Who will give my two and a half hours back?’ I hear you if you are one of those!

Well, pursuing MBA in India is a similar kind of a story. The graph of your hopes declines in the process starting from going through what feels like an endless process of writing the nightmarish entrance exam like CAT, running to fill forms to get shortlisted, going for interviews and then spending sleepless nights waiting for results! Hoping for it to be positive.

The most important thing- your MBA degree has no value unless you have studied in a prestigious college which would cost a bomb of course. And the college won’t feel like a ‘2 states’ movie that you expected it to be…

As a person who has ‘successfully’ completed MBA and has been practising the profession for a while now, I, with my experience would want to throw light on some of the expectations of MBA students that only remain expectations today, meaning the reality is too far from what we imagine. If you are an MBA aspirant, you might want to consider a reality check!

Here are some of your myths about an MBA degree that need to be unfollowed right now.

Pay package:

They say ‘hardwork pays’. Well, not really. By the time you get placed, certainly ‘hardwork’ doesn’t seem to pay much. Mostly, not even the package of Rs 4 or 5 lakh that you were dreaming about.

100% placement:

Something that almost all the colleges talk about with those bold letters in their brochures or websites to woo you. Then comes the reality. Once you join the college, either one by one the organisations listed on the brochures/websites get dropped for some unknown reasons or the students get dropped for ‘not possessing the skills required as they know only theory’.

Well, that was a quick realisation. Doesn’t that raise a question on the conduct of MBA colleges?

Degree matters:

Of course it does! That’s why we are here. It matters until you are sitting in front of an employer who has no collaboration with your ‘prestigious’ college and asks you ‘Why should we hire you? You have no amount of experience?’

Best among the rest professions:

Ahh, that’s the way you sell a product!

Status in society:

10 years ago, you could enjoy the ‘MBA’ tag. Not anymore. Turn around and check how many of your friends, cousins, distant relatives are pursuing MBA. You will realise- there are many! This is not surprising as this 114-year-old degree is one of the most popular one today.
