The TSS or the Temporary Skills Shortage visa is the new short-term work visa for Australia. According to an official Australian government announcement in April 2017, the 457 visas will be phased out. Consequently, the introduction of the TSS visa will start following this phase out by March 2018. The reality is it’s not just a name change. Instead, there are several major and minor modifications to the new TSS visa.
If you are looking to apply for the Temporary Skills Shortage visa, you need to aware of these modifications. So, to know more about the TSS, read on!
TSS Visa – What is It?
The TSS visa was explicitly designed to allow various skilled workers to work in Australia. You can thank the legitimate skills shortage for it and for developing this moniker. However, as per the Australian government legislation, the TSS visa consists of fewer eligible skilled jobs. These are in comparison to the previous iteration of the 457. The eligible skilled jobs are of the two following categories,
- Short Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL)
- Medium- and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
There are a lot of associated caveats that apply now with the TSS visa. One can take the example of airplane pilots. The pilots can only qualify for the TSS if they work in regional Australia exclusively. The occupations lists are modified and updated on a periodic basis, and the occupations are subject to changes. The applications require many months to complete so the list might change by the time you get the visa.
The Short-term Skilled Occupations
You can find the complete occupation list on the Short-Term Skilled Occupations List or the STSOL. You can only renew the visa once from the onshore facilities. Applicants require an IELTS score of 5 and exceptions exist for native English-speaking nations. There is no option for residency with this type of the TSS visa. Moreover, the applicant needs to display the intent of staying in Australia temporarily.
The Medium- and Long-term Strategic Skills
You can find the complete occupation list on the Medium- and Long-Term Strategic Skills List. Her you have the option of renewing your visa from the onshore facility unlimited number of times. The IELTS score required by the candidate is 6. A clear pathway to residency exists if you are going for this option.
All you have to remember is they are the same visa. They only differ depending on your job and which list they are categorized into.
About the Duration of Stay
The duration of your stay is dependent on the type of the TSS visa you hold or are applying for. With the short term TSS, the length of your stay is 2 years. Whereas, with the medium- and long-term visa the duration of stay is for four years.
You need to be aware if you are holding another kind of visa which has a clause for no-further-stay. In that case, you aren’t permitted to apply for the TSS to extend your stay.
Be aware of all the information before applying for your TSS visa.
