About Applied Arts

Applied art refers to the application of artistic design to practical and functional things in everyday use. Applied arts is a specialisation of fine arts which basically deals in graphic design, interior design, fashion design, advertising and visual communication. It gives exposure to print media, electronic media and advertising.
Applied arts can include architecture, pottery, basket weaving, costumes, interior design, jewellery, tools, weapons, and bookbinding as well.

Salary in Applied Arts
Like in any other field the remuneration in this field depends on qualification, experience and area in which one works. One could get an initial pay of ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 per month.
Applied Arts Role Models
R.K. Joshi
R.K. Joshi– He was an academic type designer and calligrapher. He designed the main Indian fonts used in Microsoft Windows. He received Bukva-raz, an International Award for his ‘Raghu’ font. Ad Club awarded Lifetime achievement award in 2004. One of his best project: Punjab National Bank Logo. Joshi was born into a middle class Indian family. He was brought up in the town of Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He developed an interest in alphabets, their shapes, styles and design. In 1952, he decided to study art at Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. During this time he found a scarcity of typefaces in Indian languages. He took up extra classes at the Government Institute of Printing Technology, located within the institute premises, where he learned that Indian typefaces were intricate and had many problems in typesetting. He participated in the first exhibition on Indian typefaces at the college.
Sujata Keshavan
Sujata Keshavan is an Indian graphic designer. She is a co-founder of Ray and Keshavan, a brand design firm based in India. Sujata is the wife of the noted historian and writer Ramachandra Guha. Sujata graduated from the National Institute of Design in 1984. She then moved to Yale, graduating in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts in graphic design from the School of Art, Yale University. At Yale, Sujata studied under legendary designers Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson and Armin Hofmann. After graduating from Yale, Sujata moved back to India. In 1989, she co-founded Ray and Keshavan, in India. Brand design is about corporate image-building, it is about using strategic designs to make a company look better and connect better to its customers and the public. Sujata was instrumental in giving the 130-year-old Himalaya Drug Company a complete image makeover. She is also the one who has given the indigenous MTR a modern, international look. She was also involved in designing the logo of Infosys. •She is the only Indian graphic designer to be honoured twice as the Graphic Designer of the Year at the annual Advertising and Marketing (A & M) awards. Some of her best projects: Delhi international airport logo, Mumbai international airport logo.
