Definition

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, those being unicellular (single cell), multicellular (cell colony), or acellular (lacking cells). Microbiology encompasses numerous sub-disciplines including virology, parasitology, mycology and bacteriology. Microbiologists often rely on molecular biology tools such as DNA sequence based identification. Microbiology therefore includes the study of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. In practice the majority of microbiology is concerned with bacteria and/or viruses although eukaryotic microbiology is also a very important branch of microbiology.
