Life after High School WHAT'S NEXT

Why do they always teach us that it’s easy and evil to do what we want and that we need discipline to restrain ourselves? It’s the hardest thing in the world–to do what we want. And it takes the greatest kind of courage. I mean, what we really want.– Ayn Rand

Being a high school student, there must be lots of questions going through your mind. Questions such as, what will you do after you finish school, Which college you will go to, What subjects you will take, what you want out of life and so on. There will be a whole lot of difficult decisions for you to make soon. And the right way to begin is by choosing a satisfying and fulfilling career.

It is a tough decision to make. There are so many options in front of you that choosing what you really want to do may become a challenge. Barbara Sher in her book I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It wrote “Every time you have to make a choice about anything, think “Does this go toward or away from what I want?” Always choose what goes toward what you want.”

When you are considering a career, the first thing that you must consider is yourself. No one knows you better than yourself. What are your interests, what are your strengths, what kind of a person you are, what is your personality? All these will help in determining what kind of work / job gives you a personal satisfaction. It will help you determine what career is best for you. You also need to equip yourself with information about the various career prospects available for you. The internet is a good place to research and find information about the various available options. Career counselling is also a useful way to help in choosing your career.

Some simple steps towards choosing your career are:

1.Set your goals:  Find out where you want to go. What is the ultimate destination? Give a direction to your efforts by setting a goal. Think about what kind of job roles will be good for you and can give you what you want. What job will give you personal satisfaction? What are the growth prospects in the chosen field both in terms of personal growth and financial growth? Setting your goals is the first and very important step towards building your career.

2.Have the right attitude: The dictionary meaning of Attitude is “The way a person thinks and behaves”. Once you have set your goals and planned what you want, it is time to execute the plan. For this you require to be totally committed. You have to be totally dedicated in terms of investing your efforts and time in the pursuit of your career goals. It is this commitment that will tip the odds in favour of your goals. You may get several opportunities that will lead you towards your goals. But these opportunities will work only if you have a positive attitude. Any negative attitude will take you away from your goals. Always have a positive attitude towards your work, towards the organisation that you are working for and its overall functioning and towards your goals.

3.Equip yourself with the right[sociallocker] accessories: It is always better to be abreast of what is happening in the professional world around us. Keep yourself up to date with the industry updates. Enhance your technical skills in your free time. Learn about any new techniques to enhance your job. Attend any training programmes which will help you upgrade your existing skills set. These will help you in enhancing your professional skills. These are small investments into your professional future. These will not only help you get the right job, it will also help you in enhancing your chances for promotion, appraisals and the right kind of offers coming your way.

Finally, in the words of Margaret Young:

“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards, they try to have more things or more money in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are then do what you need to do in order to have what you want.”[/sociallocker]
