Definition
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eyeball and orbit. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye disease. Ophthalmologists offer a comprehensive approach to ocular symptoms and diseases. As well as diagnosing and treating ocular diseases either by medical or surgical means, ophthalmologists offer comprehensive ocular-visual assessment, which may include the prescription of corrective lenses.

Salary in Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology Role Models
Frederick Cossom Hollows
Frederick Cossom Hollows- He was a New Zealand-Australian ophthalmologist who became known for his work in restoring eyesight for thousands of people in Australia and many other countries. It has been estimated that more than one million people in the world can see today because of initiatives instigated by Hollows the most notable example being The Fred Hollows Foundation. In 1961, he went to Moorfields Eye Hospital in England to study ophthalmology. He then did post-graduate work in Wales before moving in 1965 to Australia, where he became associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. From 1965–1992 he chaired the ophthalmology division overseeing the teaching departments at the University of New South Wales, and the Prince of Wales and Prince Henry hospitals.
Hermann von Helmholtz
Hermann von Helmholtz- He was a German physician and physicist who made significant contributions in several scientific fields. In 1851, Helmholtz revolutionized the field of ophthalmology with the invention of the ophthalmoscope; an instrument used to examine the inside of the human eye. This made him world-famous overnight. Helmholtz's interests at that time were increasingly focused on the physiology of the senses. His main publication, titled Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik (Handbook of Physiological Optics or Treatise on Physiological Optics), provided empirical theories on depth perception, color vision, and motion perception, and became the fundamental reference work in his field during the second half of the nineteenth century.
