Scoring High in English Section, SSC CGL Tier 2
SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam was conducted by the SSC from 5th August 2017 to 23rd August 2017. Tier 2 exam will be conducted on 10th & 11th November 2017. Candidates, who will qualify in Tier 1 exam can appear in Tier 2 exam. Many candidates perceive English as a tough subject and believe that good vocabulary is important to clear the exam. On the contrary, it can be one of the most scoring subjects. You can get 180+ marks in English Section, SSC CGL Tier 2 if you prepare well with the right strategy.
I have put some useful advice and preparation tips to get a high score in Tier 2 English paper of SSC CGL 2017.
SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern 2017
SSC CGL Exam Tier 2 is conducted into four papers.
- Quantitative Aptitude
- English Language & Comprehension
- Statistics
- General Studies (Finance & Economics)
First two papers are common for all posts. You can see below that SSC CGL English Subject contains 200 questions (1 marks for each question) and total time duration is 2 hours.
There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer for paper 2 that is English section.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Syllabus for the English Language
Questions for the English Language in tier 2 will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding and knowledge of English Language. Syllabus for this component includes below topics:
- Spot the error
- Fill in the blanks
- Synonyms
- Antonyms
- Spelling/detecting misspelled words
- Idioms & phrases
- One-word substitution
- Improvement of sentences
- Active/passive voice of verbs
- Conversion into direct/indirect narration
- Shuffling of parts of a sentence
- Shuffling of sentences in a passage
- Cloze passage & comprehension passage
How to Prepare SSC CGL Tier 2 for English Section
Below are the various tips and strategic plans to get good marks.
- Firstly, you should know the complete exam pattern and syllabus for English Section of SSC CGL Tier 2.
- Now, you should divide your preparation into three parts: Vocabulary, Grammar & Reading Ability
- You should prepare a time table and allocate equal time to all subjects.
- Focus on your wea
k topics and learn at least one new word daily. - To improve your vocabulary, you should always try to speak English and for reading ability, read daily English newspapers like – Hindustan Times, Times of India etc.
- Solve Previous Years’ question papers and mock tests daily to know the paper pattern and weightage of the questions. If you are solving the previous papers daily, you will improve your solving time and at a time you will attempt almost all question in 2 hours.
- Write at least 200-300 words daily on any topics to improve your grammar.
