GRE scores play an active and vital role during the admission process as it filters out students and assesses their caliber. Thus, it’s extremely necessary to plan a strategy if you want to explore the chances of having the best score for GRE. Having an end goal- the target scores you’re aiming for helps you plan your preparation for the exam.
It is relevant to set a practical goal. A student should fix their target scores based on the admission requirements of their preferred University, their current skill levels and the time they have available to prepare for the exam and achieve their set goal.
A decent GRE score strengthens a student’s profile and helps them in their admission process. For Instance, some colleges like SDSU have a cut off of 158 in quantitative reasoning for MS in CS and some require a 4 in AWA. With a GRE score above 320, 160 or more score in Quant, 150 or more in Verbal and a 4.0 in AWA, a student can safely apply to any college without fearing for his admission.
SUBJECT | ACCEPTABLE SCORE |
QUANTITATIVE REASONING | 160 OR MORE |
VERBAL | 150 OR MORE |
AWA | 4.0 |
The average score is different for different universities. Even different departments within the same university have set a different benchmark with different GRE score ranges. The Verbal and Quantitative scores are viewed independently, though the universities demand that the Verbal and Quantitative scores are balanced and not much gap exists between them.
A good GRE score depends on the preparation of the student and the University’s criteria for admission. It can range from an average score of 320 and 340. There is no saying that a good GRE score, as high as 330, can fetch you a welcoming embrace from your desired University. It is not the only criteria based on which universities admit students. Other than a good GRE score there are various other factors based on which the universities evaluate the performance of students: academic qualification, work experience, English proficiency etc.
