Early morning lectures, tight deadlines, and complex ideas in a college are enough to proclaim that student-life is no easy. They are the most taxing period of a student’s life. Understandably, many high school students shudder at the thought of committing themselves to countless hours of coursework. This is more so as they have to follow this commitment immediately after completing the SAT. Still, you may be pleased to know that not all college majors aren’t much demanding. This is more so if you compare them to the likes of Medicine or Biology or Architecture. There are countless less stressful majors for aspiring college students to choose from. Many of these disciplines open the door to some pretty exciting careers down the line. In this article, we’ll be discussing majors which require only a small number of hours. And what’s more, they will be giving you the highest earning potential.

Majors Involving Less Stress and Producing More Cash

Astronomy

A natural science, astronomy is the study of celestial bodies and occurrences. And please don’t confuse it with astrology. Astrology is the study of celestial bodies and the impact their positions have on the human psyche. Astronomy is one of the least time-consuming majors offered by colleges in the United States. It grants students an average of 13.08 hours of free time per working week. This figure does not include time spent traveling to and from classes, nor does it include assignments, study, and sleeping.

Despite being one of the calmer majors available, Astronomy can be the first step towards a career in aerospace. Astronomers are often called upon in aerospace to supplement the efforts of aerospace engineers. Many Astronomy majors enter education to share their knowledge with budding astronomers. Thus, they keep much the same gentle schedule that they enjoyed as a student. In the United States, an astronomy lecturer can expect to earn an average annual salary of $85,540. This figure easily exceeds the nation’s average salary of $51,939.

Zoology

Many don’t consider Zoology a major. Still, those who choose to pursue it may well enjoy an impressive salary upon graduating. It’s the education system’s best-kept secret. A Zoology major will grant you just under 13 hours of downtime per working week. And, the assignments you will be expected to complete during working hours are far from demanding. Moreover, you may have tiring leisure for yourself throughout your Zoology major. It can be to the extreme of making you almost feel guilty about obtaining the $63,823 as your average salary. And that figure is just the beginning. A veteran zoologist can command a much higher number with some earning as much as $106,820 in a single year.

Software Engineering

You may haven’t researched Software Engineering in the past. Then, you likely hold the same erroneous belief that is held by many outsiders. It’s that Software Engineering is a draining major that opens the door only to equally draining careers. It may be true that a major in Software Engineering qualifies you for some, particularly stressful positions. Still, there are plenty of less time-consuming jobs in the field. These occupations pay just as well, and in some cases even better, than their more taxing alternatives.

The major in Software Engineering is particularly light. Comparing it with Zoology and Astronomy, it will leave you with a total of 13.84 hours of relaxation each week. Among the less time-consuming careers, a major in Software Engineering will put you perfectly in line for web development. Here, you pick up a mean annual salary of $104,300. Similarly, in 2016, the top web developers in the United States earned a salary of $119,550.

Computer Science

Much like Software Engineering, Computer Science is one of those majors that those who have not done their research believe to rank with the likes of Medicine when it comes to course hours. In reality, Computer Science leaves students with 13.07 hours of free time a week while much of the coursework allows them to spend time online. A STEM major, Computer Science opens the door to a career as a computer systems analyst, which brings a mean annual salary of $91,620. With a major in Computer Science, you will also be able to pursue a career in web development, which, as mentioned above, brings a six-figure average salary.

Public Relations and Advertising

In a world where a celebrity or company can destroy their reputation in just 280 characters, a major in Public Relations and Advertising has never been more valuable. Use your major to obtain a position as a public relations manager and you will be tasked with handling the fallout from various missteps and misdeeds. The stress of the job will rise and fall depending on who you’re representing, but even in the most taxing of cases, you’ll have a mean annual salary of $102,662 to soothe the pain. Despite the fact it opens the door to a six-figure salary almost right off the bat, a major in Public Relations and Advertising asks little of those who pursue it and leaves them with a total of 12.93 hours per week to indulge in their hobbies.

Conclusion

Third-level education can be stressful, there’s no denying that. However, as you can see from the majors discussed above, it doesn’t have to be. Go with a major that grants you upwards of 10 hours of downtime per week and you can be more or less certain of a peaceful and pleasant college experience, with no tight deadlines or unreasonably high word counts to drag you away from house parties, video games, and Netflix. It is important to remember, however, that in order to obtain the six-figure salaries mentioned in the previous sections, you’re going to have to commit yourself to your course during the designated hours. Work hard while within college walls and it will make those dozen-plus hours of free time per week all the more enjoyable.
