Scoring 8 band in the IELTS Speaking test might seem impossible to many IELTS candidates but it is actually quite possible and simple too if follow these 10 important things.
English Grammar
This is the most important thing in the IELTS Speaking section. Many candidates think that all they have to do is speak and they can ignore the grammar rules, but this is the wrong impression they have. You will never be able to score more than 4.5 band if you speak wrong/grammatically incorrect sentences. You should know which tense to use where. The IELTS examiner will not directly test the tenses because they expect you to know them. If you think that you can take the IELTS exam without knowing the tenses then you should prepare yourself for 4.5 or lower band score.
Clarity in speaking
For the IELTS speaking test, do not adopt a fake accent! Also, make sure that you don’t mumble while speaking. The examiner will know if you speak in a fake accent. Some candidates speak English as if they are in a race. If you do this, the examiner will not know what you are speaking and you will lose marks. So, refrain from this kind of activity.
Confidence is the key
Let the examiner know that you are confident. Do not feel shy as this is just a test. Candidates often lose marks because of their shy nature as they speak very less in front of the examiner. You will have to be talkative and you will have to engage the examiner in the conversation to get 8 band.
4. Your answer should never be a “NO”
You are not supposed to say “NO” in the IELTS speaking test. For example, if the examiner asks you to talk about magazines you simply cannot tell the examiner that you have never read a magazine. Even if you haven’t read a magazine, you will have to make it up. You will have to think about a magazine or even make an imaginary one just to speak about it.
Practice English speaking
Try speaking in English whenever you have a conversation with your friends and family. If you start doing this as soon as you decide to take the IELTS test, you will definitely become much confident and will be able to speak confidently in front of the examiner. You can also try Google groups; you will find many people there with whom you can practice English speaking.
Describe things
You should be able to describe things. If the examiner asks you about your favorite sport, you should first name your favorite sport and then describe it a little – why do you like it? Since when are you following it? Which is your favorite team? And any recent news related to it.
Identical words
The most common problem amongst candidates is they forget words while speaking in English. In order to overcome this problem the speaker should know at least 3 similar words for each word that you speak. If you know some identical words you will never pause in between while speaking in front of the examiner.
Don’t argue with the examiner
At any point during the IELTS speaking test, you are not to indulge in any kind of argument with the examiner. Keep in mind that you are not taking the test to convince the examiner. You are taking the test to prove your proficiency in the English language.
Complete the sentences
One word answers will never help you get a good score. So, if you are looking out for 8 band in the IELTS speaking test, you need to give little descriptive answers. You will have to speak complete sentences and you should also have the ability to join two sentences by using conjunctions. A good English grammar book could come in handy here.
Answer all the questions
You cannot ask the examiner to skip a question and neither can you leave a question unanswered. So, you have to figure out a way to answer the question by making up an answer instantly. For example, if the examiner asks you to speak on a museum that you have visited but in reality, you haven’t been to the museum ever then you will have to come up with a story if your own about a museum. Therefore, you also need to be quick in thinking and speaking too.
