“Oh no!” I shouted with a screeching noise. “I am up late today. I need to finish cleaning all the lamps today or else Ma would be really upset” Waking up with a jolt, I took a bath quickly. After getting ready, I started cleaning all the lamps at home. There was only a golden-coloured lamp left. There was an ‘A’ mark on it which caught my eye. Going closer, I wiped the lamp with my hand to remove the ‘A’ mark. Out of a blue, there came a blue ghost like person wearing red and shining yellow ‘dhoti’ and an old and battered red turban.
He said “I am a genie, your servant, and you are my master. I will fulfil all your wishes for the day!”
I was surprised. I pinched myself and saw if I was dreaming. The genie said that I wasn’t dreaming and that my wish was his command for the day!
As I pondered over all my wants, I said, “Um….I want all the poor people in the village to get clothes and food.”
He exclaimed, “Yes master AKLAMBAN BAKLANBAN! Let the poor get food and clothes.” I heard a distance voice saying, “Oh my God! May God bless the person who gave these clothes and food for us.”
The genie asked me for the second wish. I told him to cure the ill people of their sickness. “Yes master AKLAMBAN BAKLAMBAN! Let the ill get well”.
In the corner of my eye, through the window, I could see Uncle Arora’s face lighting up with pure joy as he felt himself recovering from his illness. I smiled in satisfaction!
When asked for my third wish, I said, “As of now I have nothing to wish for. Let us go outside to see if anyone needs help!”
“Sure master”, the genie answered. Glancing at the dirt scattered all over the roads and piles of waste lying at the far end of the streets, I felt very uneasy! I said, “Clean all these roads and remove all the waste from it.”“Yes master AKLABAN BAKLABAN! Let the roads get cleaned.” I smiled contently at the clean and pleasant sight in front of me. It was then that I realised the beauty of nature.
I noticed it was getting dark and I need to return home. I said, “My last and final wish is that we should get back home now.” “Yes master AKLABAN BAKLABAN! Let us go home right now.”
In the blink of my eye, I found myself at a familiar place – my home. I realised that the entire day had been really fun and that I had enjoyed myself a lot. I felt proud that I was able to help the villagers. I thanked the genie for all the courtesies and went to sleep peacefully that night wishing it was not a dream!
