BREAK THE STEREOTYPES

Have you just finished your higher secondary education? Are you conflicted between your dreams and your parents’ dreams? Do you aspire to become a writer but are you being forced to take up medicine or engineering by your parents?

Then it is now time for you to go against the rules and break the stereotypes. It is time for you to stand your ground and fulfill your dreams.

“My son will become an engineer. My daughter will become a doctor.”

This would be the dialogue of most Indian parents. Indians parents deem it a privilege to say that their children are into medicine and engineering. They are very condescending towards the other fields of education such as arts and humanities.

This very attitude of Indian parents has to be changed. All fields of education have to be given importance in order to bring a balance in the society. People should understand the value of other fields of education. While on one hand it is true that science plays a significant role in the lives of humans, it should also be noted that arts and humanities also play a major role in bringing peace and harmony among the people.

“ART WITHOUT ENGINEERING IS DREAMING. ENGINEERING WITHOUT ART IS CALCULATING”

ARTS AND SCIENCE ARE INTERDEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER AND IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR BOTH THE FIELDS TO EXIST WITHOUT THE OTHER.

It is very much important for everyone to know about the importance of all fields of education. First, let us talk about science.

It is in a way true that science is the very source of living. The very reason you are even reading this article is because of science. Had it not been the advancement of science, our lives today would have been tedious. Had it not been for Marie Curie and her invention of the x-ray, it would have been impossible for the doctors to diagnose the disease these days. Had it not been for Graham Bell and his invention of the telephone, communicating with people overseas would have remained a dream till date. So it is very much evident that science was, is, and will be a significant part of human lives.

Just because science has made human lives easier it doesn’t mean that we got to demean other fields such as arts and humanities. Arts and humanities have also played a significant role in shaping the citizens of the society into sociable beings.  Had it not been for the writings of Shakespeare and Donne, we would have not known and experienced the beauty of literature at all. Had it been not been for the discoveries of the archeologists, we would not have known about the existence of dinosaurs at all.

It is very clear and evident that all fields of education are important and are all interdependent. If you aspire to become a teacher rather than an engineer, never feel ashamed. You should realize that you are about to take up a profession which will enable you to create the future society. If you aspire to become a writer, do not think that you are boring and nerdy. You must realize that you will have the power to influence and communicate with people through your writings. And also if you wish to become a doctor, do not think that you are being stereotypical. You will have to remember that you are taking up a profession through which you will save the lives of many.

It is time for you to not follow the beaten track but to create your own desired destiny by standing your ground. Never be condescending towards any field of education.  Never stay silent when it comes to deciding about your future. Never let your parents decide what is right for you without your approval. You are the one who has the power and the right to decide what you want to pursue in your life. You don’t have to be stereotypical for it is not a sin to not be stereotypical.

“NEVER BE AFRAID OF BEING DIFFERENT. BE AFRAID OF BEING THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE.”
