About
Definition
“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms: it is about understanding.” ~William Paul Thurston Mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes and patterns. Mathematicians are people who do numeracy. Mathematics is useful for solving problems that occur in the real world, so many people besides mathematicians study and use mathematics. Today, some mathematics is needed in many jobs. Business, science, engineering, and construction need some knowledge of mathematics. Experts in mathematics perform research to create new theorems. Applied mathematics uses mathematics to solve problems of other areas such as engineering, physics, and computing. Mathematicians can receive the Abel prize and the Fields Medal for important works.Career Path

Role Models
Srinivasa Ramanujan
Srinivasa Ramanujan- He was an Indian mathematician who lived during the British Rule in India. Though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems which were considered to be unsolvable. Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation which was quickly recognized by Indian mathematicians. He also achieved Fellow of the Royal Society award. Aiyer sent Ramanujan, with letters of introduction, to his mathematician friends in Madras. Some of them looked at his work and gave him letters of introduction to R. Ramachandra Rao, the district collector for Nellore and the secretary of the Indian Mathematical Society.
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao- He is an Indian-born, naturalized American, mathematician and statistician. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Penn State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao has been honored by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. He has achieved Padma Vibhushan, National Medal of Science (2001), S. S. Bhatnagar Prize and Guy Medal. Rao worked at the Indian Statistical Institute and the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge. Rao has received 38 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in 19 countries around the world and numerous awards and medals for his contributions to statistics and science.
