COPING WITH PRESSURE…

Young people should have everything to be happy about; yet this generation is a standing testimony to how false this statement can be.Students these days face great stress. A 2013 survey by the Nightline Association found that 65% of students feel stressed.  In an Indian educational setup, the demand to score well has always been on a high.

Intense 7 hours of school followed by umpteen hours of coaching classes, has the ability to suck every ounce of strength out of you. In addition to that, coming home finally does not mean time for resting, for, you have to catch up with all that has been taught. There are also a large number of upcoming tests in preparation for the boards and entrance exams, in which you have to perform well because of the huge expectations your friends, family, and frankly every person who knows you, places on you. Also, having an over-achieving sibling or neighbor kid can prove to be such a burden. Here’s when you feel, all this hectic life and expectations which mounts to what we commonly refer to as pressure, gets the better of you and all you want to do is just give up on life and run far away. This is the pathetic life of almost every 11th or 12th grader in India.

As a student, every spare minute seems to be filled worrying.  And every year, hundreds of young teens crumble under exam pressure and take extreme steps. If chronic stress is ignored for long enough, it can eventually lead to mental and physical breakdowns and even depression. Thus, developing strategies to be able to cope with this immense pressure becomes of utmost importance. It might not seem like it while you’re feeling so low, but living a stress-free life is possible. Following certain tips can, by a large amount, reduce the amount of stress that you undergo.

  • Prioritize your work: With an enormous amount of work to do in a small period of time, making a list of the important ones to do and creating an effective strategy  can put your mind at ease and give you the assurance that you can handle what’s at hand.
  • Think positively: Keeping things in perspective and having a positive attitude can be a very effective tool against stress. Even while dealing with very stressful situations, approaching things with a positive perspective can be a good way to minimize its effect on you.
  • Stick to a healthy diet: Maintaining a healthy body is probably the best way to minimize the damage that stress can cause. Caffeine and sugar are unfortunately staples of most students’ diet, especially when there is a need to focus or study late, but both of these offer temporary solutions with negative long-term effects. Both caffeine and sugar will exacerbate the symptoms of stress.
  • Exercise: In addition to keeping your body fit, doing regular exercise can act as a great stress-reliever. It helps your body produce endorphin that makes you feel good.
  • Music: Music is indeed ‘Food for the Soul’. Listening to music can calm you down and put you in a better state of mind. Putting on some calming music while working really does the trick!
  • Sleep: And last but not least, sleep is always the best remedy for calming you down. Once you wake up, your mind is calmer and you feel better prepared to tackle and overcome all obstacles. Taking a short 20 minutes nap in the noon has been proven to increase your productivity significantly.

Stress is a part of everyday life. You actually have more control over stress than you think. Stress management is all about taking charge: of your lifestyle, thoughts and the way you deal with problems. No matter how powerless you may feel, believe that you can and you’re already halfway there. Effective stress-management strategies can certainly go a long way in ensuring that the pressure that you keep bottled inside you doesn’t make you too overwhelmed.
