Entrance exams for Ph.D. in IITs and NITs

• CSIR-UGC NET Exam.
• IIT JAM (Joint Admission test for Masters).

What is CSIR-UGC NET Exam?

CSIR-UGC NET Exams is conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and University Grant Commission (UGC) for the candidates who want to pursue Ph.D. programs in IITs or NITs.

You can appear twice for the CSIR-UGC NET entrance exam for Ph.D. in the month of June and in December.

CSIR-UGC NET exam was conducted on 18th June 2017 and candidates can also appear in the month of December 2017.

Who is eligible for CSIR-UGC NET Exam?

Below are the details for CSIR-UGC NET eligibility criteria:

Nationality:

Candidate appearing for CSIR-UGC NET entrance exam for Ph.D. must be an Indian only.

Age Limit:

• The upper age limit for appearing for JRF is 28 years. Relaxation of 5 years in age will be given for candidates belonging to SC/ ST/OBC/ PH/Visually handicapped/female category.
• There is no upper age limit for Lecturership.

Educational Qualification:

• Candidates should have completed four years degree course BE/B.Tech/integrated BS-MS/ B. Pharma/MBBS/M.Sc/BSc (Hons) or equivalent degree OR BS program OR B.Sc (Hons) OR candidates who’re admitted into included MS-PhD Application and have scored minimum 55% marks for general & OBC-NCL and 50% marks for SC/ST/PWD categories.
• Candidates who have just obtained their 10+2+3 degree and enrolled for M.Sc. application apply under result Awaited (RA) class. But the candidate must satisfy the eligibility before the last date of online application.

Exam Pattern for CSIR-UGC NET Exam

• CSIR-UGC NET exam will be on objective type exam
• The exam will be in three parts: Part A, Part B, and Part C.
• Part A is common for all subjects. Part A is comprised of MCQs based on the quantitative comparison, graphical analysis, logical reasoning, series formation, puzzles, analytical and numerical ability etc.
• Part B will contain Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), based on topics given in the syllabus.
• Part C will check the knowledge of scientific concepts and their application.
• The exam will be of maximum 200 marks.
• 30 marks for General Aptitude.
• 70 marks will be of subject related questions.
• 100 marks scientific concepts and application.

About IIT JAM Exam

IIT JAM is Joint Admission test for MSc. It is an entrance test to get admitted in IITs, NITs, or IISc to pursue M.Sc (Four Semesters), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-M.Tech., M.Sc.-Ph.D Dual Degree & other courses.

IIT JAM exam is conducted in seven subjects and candidates can give the exam for a maximum of two subjects. But the subjects the candidate chooses must not be conducted in the same session.

It is an entrance exam for Ph.D. and other courses to get admitted in IITs and NITs.

Who is eligible for IIT JAM exam?

Below are the common eligibility criteria for the candidates who want to appear for IIT JAM exam:

• Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from any stream from any recognized university.
• Both Indian & Foreign candidates are eligible.
• There is no age limit for IIT-JAM exam.
• Candidates appearing for their final year exams are also eligible.
• Candidates must have a minimum of 55% marks for General & OBC and 50% marks for SC, ST categories.
• At the time of admission, all admitted candidates will have to submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed form.
• At the time of admission, the admitted candidates may also have to undergo a physical fitness test by a medical board constituted by the Admitting Institute. In case a candidate is not found physically fit to pursue his/her chosen course of study, his/her admission is liable to be cancelled.

Exam Pattern for IIT JAM Exam

• The exam will be organized through online mode.
• The exam will be in English language only.
• There are a total of 60 questions of 100 marks.
• Duration will be 3 hours.
• The exam is divided into three sections:
• Section A– 30 MCQs of 50 marks: Out of a total of 30 questions, 10 questions are of one mark each and 20 questions are of two marks each. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark for each question answered incorrectly out of the one mark question and 2/3 marks are deducted for each incorrect question which is of two marks each. There is no negative marking for any question left unanswered.
• Section B– 10 MCQs of 20 marks: Each correct answer in this section is awarded two marks. There is no negative marking in this section.
• Section C– 20 NAT of 30 marks: Out of the total 20 questions, first 10 questions are of one mark each and other 10 questions are of two marks each. There is no negative marking in this section as well.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Exam

GATE is an entrance exam for IITs and NITs to pursue postgraduate programs (M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.).

GATE scores may also be used by Public and Private Sector.

Eligibility Criteria

There is no age limit for GATE exam.

Candidates with Bachelor’s degree are eligible for GATE exam.

Candidates appearing for their final year exams are also eligible, but should submit the certificate from the Principal of University or College.

Candidates with Diploma are not eligible for GATE exam.

Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination, have to submit their certificate or degree certificate or provisional certificate.

Exam Pattern

There are total 65 questions of 100 marks.

Duration for GATE exam is 3 hours.

The question paper consists of both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type questions.

In the papers with the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the Engineering Mathematics section carries around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section carries 15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.

In the papers with the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL, the General Aptitude section carries 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.
