JEE Advanced (previously IIT JEE)

JEE Advanced is one of the toughest exams out there. How tough? Look at the figure below. Only around 7 in a thousand people who attempt JEE Main get to become IITians. There are 10006 seats for almost 13.6 Lakh students. Don’t you want to be one of them? The first thing that you should be doing is getting to know everything there is to know about JEE Advanced. 0.74% seems hard. Hard work can throw that difficulty far far away!

This doesn’t even give the bigger picture because this one does not consider category based seat allocation. For that (you’ll find more in the eligibility criteria), and more, read on.

Eligibility Criteria

Ready to know whether you are eligible for writing one of the most difficult exams in the history of mankind? Follow the flowchart to find out!

Now there’s an additional criteria that many often forget while preparing. Of the 220000 who qualify for JEE Main to become eligible for writing JEE Advanced, many are from different reserved categories. Make sure you take that into consideration while you make your calculations. Here is the category-wise breakdown of seats allocated for General, OBC, SC, ST, and PwD (available first on EduGorilla).

Sl No. Category Reservation Number of top ranking candidates Probability of getting a seat in %
1 Open 50.5% 107767 111100 3.6 in a thousand candidates 0.3625
2 Open – PwD 3333 3.7 in a thousand candidates 0.3737
3 OBC-NCL 27% 57618 59400 5.6 in a thousand candidates 0.5675
4 OBC-NCL – PwD 1782 5.7 in a thousand candidates 0.5735
5 SC 15% 32010 33000 4.8 in a thousand candidates 0.4814
6 SC – PwD 990 4.85 in a thousand candidates 0.4847
7 ST 7.5% 16005 16500 4.3 in a thousand candidates 0.4275
8 ST – PwD 495 4.3 in a thousand candidates 0.4292

Disclaimer: Please note that this does take into account the number of category based candidates who can secure a seat in the IITs. Any candidate with reservation can also secure a seat in the open-category, as open category is for all candidates, not just general candidates. Seats for SC/ST will not be de-reserved for other categories, however seats for OBC-NCL can be. PwD seats in SC/ST categories will be de-reserved only for these respective categories. As you can see, it is almost very difficult to get a seat, irrespective of your category, and hence, you should prepare to your best for JEE Advanced.

Syllabus

JEE Advanced has a syllabus that mainly derives from the CBSE’s Class XII board examination syllabus. There are several more additions, especially in the realm of chemistry and certain sections of mathematics, although as a relief, Physics has a similar syllabus, although the questions asked as of a much higher application. By virtue of the syllabus being too long, it has been added to the article as a downloadable PDF. The best part? We’ve made sure that it is of a printable form, which you can use to mark your progress (simply strike out what you’ve completed!). You can download the full syllabus here.
