The Benefits of GRE And the Need to Plan for Same
The queuing up of students across the world for international education is increasing day by day. Needless to say, some countries have a higher pull towards their universities as compared to certain other countries. The United States of America has topped as the favorite destination for students across the world to pursue their higher studies. And, so do the UK and Germany and off late Australia. Each country has their own language proficiency tests and then a small course completion if the need arises, for the overseas students. (source)
In France it is the TFI for spoken French, Germany has DADD, in the English speaking countries it is IELTS or TOEFL, GRE Singapore which is another English speaking country accepts TOEFL scores. In short, it varies as per the lingua francas of the country. There are countries who accept scores like GMAT for their management programs. Most of the countries in the world accept GRE scores as admission to their prestigious scores. These include the USA, UK, Singapore, Australia, Canada, etc.
Acceptance of GRE Scores
The top 20 universities of the world accept GRE scores and then it boils down to the language course of the specific country. In that sense, GRE is an extremely important exam for securing a good educational degree and a career overseas. It is worthwhile to spend time preparing to clear the same during the graduation years itself. According to the subject choice of the students, the country and the university can be aimed for. To take an example, in the recent timeslot of Micro-biology research students across the world are heading towards Germany to pursue their higher studies and acquire doctorate degrees.
Once the decision has been taken, it is always better to set aside a deadline for preparing yourself, joining GRE preparation classes and practicing other language tests. You need to synchronize this with the application deadline and prepare prep tests accordingly. Hence pre-planning is essential for all these exams. Clarity of career choice and the necessary groundwork to attain the same is mandatory. It is important for the students to know their own skill level and in which direction they should prepare.
The Laws and Regulations of The Host Country
It is important to know the visa requirements of the country where the student is going abroad to study. Different countries have different requirements. This varies from full-time students to study abroad students. Again there is the question of funding which is dependent on the countries immigration laws. Most of the countries verify the financial background of the incoming students to verify that only they fund and can provide for themselves. This is more relevant for the students, in the event of them not getting a job during their student tenure. The amount of bank balance requirement is different for different countries. Some countries specify a certain sum while others need proof to show that the student is “self-sufficient”.
Background Checks
This is especially so if the students are from an international background and having completed their graduation as compared to undergraduates. This is because employers in the countries where they study provide jobs to many of these students as interns. They also provide them with teaching jobs in universities and access to research programs when pursuing Ph.D. This may sometimes raise questions of national securities for the host nation. It is imperative that students who are preparing for their GRE exams should well in advance be aware of these laws of their proposed immigration countries.
Credential Transfer
Every aspirant planning to go abroad should know how his or her current credentials will benefit them i.e. both in terms of proposed overseas country and the home country. This means the graduate marks and subjects passed till date, what value they will have in the country where the student is planning to do higher studies?
Similarly, they should evaluate how the higher studies and degree acquired abroad will help them in getting a good job once they return home? It may be that subjects have good career scope in some countries and limited scope in others.
Understanding the Overall Social and Political Background of The Country
This is very much important as no students can work in a country which is politically unstable or strife-torn or veering on a severe economic crisis. It may be true that certain countries are good knowledge background on certain subjects but lack the desired socio-economic stability. A well-known European country had low-cost studies in medical degree but sadly lacked the political stability. (source)
