Students who complete their medical degree from abroad need to give one more exam before they can start practicing in India and that exam is known as Foreign Medical Graduate Examination which is conducted by National Board of Examination. Now the students must be wondering about how to prepare for the FMGE exams. The FMGE is conducted because every year several students go to abroad to complete their medical studies due to the shortage of seats and high fees in India. Once they return from abroad and want to practice in India they need to give FMGE screening test which is conducted twice every year in June and December. It is evident from the past years that only sixteen percent of the total students appearing for the FMGE screening test pass the examination. Students can take maximum of three attempts to pass this exam. The level of this exam has also gone up considerably in the past few years. Even after completing medical studies from best colleges abroad, the students need to prepare well for the exam. Thus, below are given a few tips to get through FMGE in the very first attempt and come out with flying colours.
- Cover the whole syllabus.
The candidates must have good knowledge about the whole syllabus. There is a high risk involved in studying only some particular topics and leaving a considerable portion. While appearing for FMGE there is no shortcut method. One has to be thorough with the entire syllabus. - Take notes of important topics.
It is very important to inculcate the habit of taking notes because while preparing one won’t have the time to go through the entire topic and at that time these notes would be very helpful. - Work on the weaker areas.
It is very important for the students to take every area seriously as all the marks matter. It is seen that students focus only on strong areas and neglect tough and boring areas. It is advised to give equal weightage to every area as the questions might be from any topic. - Revise again and again!
Revising the topics is very important as you have to learn and retain a lot and tough topics. Revising would help you retain the information and also give you confidence that you have prepared well for the exam. It would be great if you can give at least two rounds of revision, you better schedule your studies accordingly. - Attempt maximum number of MCQs.
High speed and accuracy are the key factors of acing FMGE. One must try to attempt large number of MCQs in various topics thus one can know his strong and weak areas. This will also give you chance to gain some extra marks and increase your chances of scoring more and passing FMGE. - Attempt mock tests.
It is very important to attempt mock tests as it gives you a clear idea of your preparation. You would get to know in which areas you do need improvement and how you can manage time for better results. You will be able to check your performance and get real time feedback about your preparation. - Do not use too many study resources.
It is very important to stick to a number of good quality study materials. Referring to a large number of study resources can leave you confused and you might get different types of material for the same topic. Studying from a single resource can help you prepare and be optimistic about your preparation. - Get involved in some brain enriching methods.
Be focused:
It will help you remember your goal and study with full dedication. Being focused is the first main objective of the whole process.
Get organized:
Know when you are going to study and what you are going to study. Plan your topics ahead and maintain a time frame. This will help you set a goal and proceed faster.
Build correlations:
Try to correlate the facts and information that you are studying. This will help you memorize and retain the information better.
