JEE Advanced: Important Procedure and Instructions

JEE Advanced is nearing, and it is best to be prepared beforehand as to the layout and other relevant information regarding the examination and have them at your fingertips, in addition to studying the syllabus. Make sure you know what kind of procedure is to be followed during the JEE Advanced exam, so as not to let a mismanaged day in terms of signing or presenting documents for verification get in your way of scoring very high marks for JEE Advanced.

OPTICAL RESPONSE SHEET (ORS)

Although there are candidates who are well versed in what an ORS (Optical Response Sheet) is, there are a few who would be seeing such a paper for the first time because they would be used to subjective examinations and would have written the computer based exam of JEE Mains. Here is a low-level exposure to ORS, and how they work, with specific instructions for JEE Advanced.

1. The answer sheet that is used in JEE Advanced, 2017, is machine readable. This means that almost negligible human interaction takes place during the correction of these sheets – it is evaluated, on a whole by a computer.
2. The same layout is present on both sides of the ORS. As mentioned above, the first side is machine readable. It is designed such that it will leave impressions of the responses on the second page, effectively acting as a carbon paper.
3. The candidate must avoid the disruption or separation of the alignment of the ORS sheets at any stage must be avoided under all circumstances. Doing so would lead to the paper no longer being accurately readable by a computer, thus leading to issues like not being able to evaluate answers properly, incorrect evaluation, or even rejection of the answer sheet by virtue of it simply not being readable.
4. The answers to all questions in the text booklet must be marked on the first page of the ORS. This is done by darkening a bubble, for single option correct questions), or darkening the correct bubbles, for multiple option correction questions (as per the instructions given in the question paper).
5. Candidates must use a ball point pen, of the colour black, for darkening the bubbles. Pencil or any other writing instrument is not allowed and will not be recognized accurately by the machine, leading to faulty evaluation and a lot of avoidable stress for the candidate.
6. Candidates should darken the bubbles by applying suitable pressure to ensure that a proper impression is made on the second page of the ORS. Again, the machine is programmed to read markings that have a particular darkness scale or higher, anything lower might be considered as duplicate marking or no marking, resulting in erroneous marking being assigned to the candidates score.
7. The second page of the answer sheet can be taken by the candidate after the examination, after the invigilator handles the sheet over to him/her.

INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING QUESTION PAPER

1. There will be 2 question papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2, each of three hours’ duration. Both papers are compulsory. You cannot write one of the papers and skip the other because you may be proficient in a certain style of questions. Doing so will lead to your paper being invalid. Even if you do not know answers to the questions asked, attempt the paper with zero markings.
2. Each question paper will consist of three separate sections, viz., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The syllabi are given here. The pattern of the question paper is not specified – this is intentional, as the pattern changes every year, and this is why JEE Advanced is considered a difficult exam by Indian standards.
3. All the questions will be of objective type (multiple choice and single digit answer type) questions designed to test the comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
4. Some of the questions will have negative marks associated with them for incorrect answers.
5. The candidates must carefully read and adhere to the detailed instructions given in the question paper. Not doing so can result in the section of questions not being evaluated or considered wrong (for instance, marking multiple answers in a single option correct question).
6. The question paper will be in either English or Hindi. Candidates must exercise the choice of question paper language while registering for JEE (Advanced) 2017. Any request for change in the question paper language post registration will be rejected. This also means you cannot change your question paper medium at the venue.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Two documents are essentials for the candidate to be allowed to write JEE Advanced. One of them is a printed copy of the admit card, and the second is a valid photo identity proof, both of which will be scrutinized at the venue during the exam. After this verification, the invigilator will provide the original admit card to the candidate. This admit card will be essential for counselling, and for writing the Architecture Aptitude Test that will follow once the results of JEE Advanced are announced.
2. The candidate’s identity will be verified by invigilators as well representatives from IITs. If there is any doubt in the identity of the candidate, (s)he may be disallowed from appearing for the examination. Should the authorities choose to give the students the benefit of doubt, they may allow the students to provisionally write the examination, after proceeding them through certain formalities. There will be no extension in examination duration, that is, no compensation to the time lost, should these formalities by followed.
3. The candidate will be inviting disqualification and legal procedures should there be any attempt at impersonation for JEE Advanced. The penalty is immediate disqualification, and not being allowed to write the exam. Depending on the nature of the offense, legal procedure may also be started.
4. The only items that are allowed inside the examination hall are pencils, pens (black ball point pen for darkening bubbles), printed copy of admit card and an original photo identity card. No candidate shall be allowed to carry any electronic device, abacus, slide rule, log books, study material of any type, geometry box, piece of paper, wallets, etc. to the examination hall. No item containing metals such as rings, bracelet, earrings, pendants or cloths with big buttons must be worn.
5. Candidates must report to the examination centres well in advance. Candidates arriving after the starting time (09:00 IST for Paper 1 and 14:00 IST for Paper 2) for either paper will not be allowed to write the examination.
6. Candidates are required to be present in the examination hall for the entire duration of each paper. They CANNOT leave the examination hall before 12:00 IST for Paper 1 and before 17:00 IST for Paper 2.
7. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory. Therefore, the ORS of ONLY those candidates who have appeared in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be evaluated/graded.
