What to Look at When Moving Out of State for College

Moving out of state for college has often been romanticized in movies, stories, and novels for a very long time. But it isn’t that romantic to move out of state for college to a different place with a different culture and different lifestyle. There are several factors that may force a person to go out of their state to further pursue their education, the quality and availability of education being the most crucial factor.

While it’s an excellent decision for a number of students, others jump on the opportunity before considering a few of the possible downsides. The realities of relocating out of state for school are often a little more challenging than some realize. For many students, their wallets and emotions take a hit.

As the final time of application and admission approaches the students and the parents face a very important question, ‘In state college or out state college’. Before choosing an out state college here are the few factors that you should consider.

  • Relocation Expenses

One of the main factors to be considered is relocation expenses.

On his blog, CheapMovingTips.com, relocation expert David Johnson says there are a number of financial decisions you need to make when relocating out of state. They include:

What do you really need to take with you to college and what can you leave behind or get rid of?

Are you going to need a moving truck (possibly costly, so shop around) or can you get your friend who has a truck to help you?

Where are you going to get boxes to store your stuff? You can buy them, ask friends or even see if a store has some extras to give you.

Are you going to have any of your stuff shipped or transported via plane or train?

Along the way, assuming it’s a long ride, where are you going to sleep? Try to find deals ahead of time online to make your stays even cheaper and book your rooms in advance.”

You have to look at your permanent lodging facilities too. If you rent an apartment then you have to buy almost everything from utensil to furniture and you also have to pay the landlord in advance. However, if you opt for the dorm you have to do a similar kind of shopping but to a less extent.

  • Cost of tuition

Another important monetary factor is the tuition fee. You have to carefully analyze the total cost of tuition and living and see if it’s in your budget. Out of state college generally, cost more. You have to make sure that everything is in your budget.

  • Emotional Difficulties

Being separated from all you know, namely, friends and family can be emotionally tough. You’ll make new friends, and it may become easier over time and even serve as a growing opportunity. Even the strongest or least emotional may find themselves shedding a tear on moving day. And even if you make it through the moving day without a lump in your throat, you may be feeling the pain in the following months.

  • Cultural differences and style of living

In a country like India where the culture, language, custom and the food changes every hundred km or so, moving out of the state can be very challenging. You have to consider the food and language of the place you are moving to. It is very difficult for a student from north India in some college in South India and vice-versa. Hence these things should be considered before moving out of the state for college.

  • Quality of College and Faculty

One of the most important factors to be considered is the quality of college and faculty in the college you want to go to. You have to contemplate if Is it really worth going out of the state to get an education in that college. Is the quality of education that much superior there. All factors regarding the quality of college and faculties should be thoroughly looked upon.
