Making a Difference in Hospitality Education

There are plenty of job options in hotel management industry, and all that aspirants need to do is focus on getting the right set of skills to become employable.

With an increase in the number of restaurants, hotels, spas and holiday resorts across the world, the scope of hotel management as a career option has grown manifold. There are plenty of jobs available for students who have opted for this field.

Looking at the boom in the hospitality industry and the need for skilled manpower, Sheila Raheja Institute of Hotel Management opened its doors in 2013 with the Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Studies programme, affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

The institute helps students develop the right set of skills and understanding to handle jobs in the hotel management industry.

SR IHM is led by Prin. B. P. Sahni, whose track record speaks for itself and the charter faculty members include veteran hospitality educators and industry experts.

The institute draws on the strength of teaching-focused faculty, enabling it to rise above the competition by providing the advanced skills and education necessary for employment. It is no wonder then that at a very nascent stage SR IHM has been ranked among the topmost institutes and is the winner of the Education Excellence Award for 2015.

Apart from the workshops and professional programmes that are run autonomously, Team SR IHM has created innovative programmes in Hospitality and Culinary Arts for the University of Mumbai.

The forthcoming Academic Year will provide these options… the much sought after Bachelor Degree  B.A. ( Culinary Arts) is a unique academic programme that puts theory into practice.

SR IHM Graduates are equipped with job-ready professional and managerial skills and this makes them likely candidates to be selected in the on-campus interviews.

The Associate Degree in Hospitality Studies and the Associate Degree in Culinary Arts allows students to temporarily take an off after a year, if they wish, with a Diploma and the programme allows a flexible entry and exit to suit their convenience.

On successfully completing two years of study the University of Mumbai will be awarded an Associate Degree. The students who enrol for the Associate Degree in Culinary Art has to work in the industry twice a week acquiring more exposure in the industry alongside.

Students who complete the Associate Degree have the option of joining the Final year of the Bachelor’s Degree. This program is more student-friendly and provides many options after completing the Associate Degree.

The new Masters programme introduced in the University of Mumbai M.Sc. (Hotel and Hospitality Administration) elevates Hospitality Education to the next level. The programmes are implemented with the philosophy of allowing students to succeed in a broader range of opportunities in the Hospitality and Culinary industry.

The 40, 000 sq. ft. fully air-conditioned campus at Kher Nagar in Bandra East is easily accessible by rail and road. It’s contemporary infrastructure includes 8 kitchens, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, 2 Housekeeping labs, a Front Office lab, 2 fully furnished guestrooms, a Library, a Computer Lab and 6 expansive audio-visually equipped lecture rooms.

The campus’s most remarkable structures are a dedicated confectionery cum choclaterie, a larder (cold kitchen) and a butchery. To counteract the stressful academic routine, a gym facility is also provided on campus.

Mega-events with celebrities from the industry are a vital part of the co-curricular activities. Visitors to SR IHM have lavished praise on students, facilities and faculty. Celebrating festivals and organizing theme events allow students to apply knowledge in practical ways. The co-curricular and extra-curricular activities throughout the year contribute to the already vibrant ambience.

Sheila Raheja Institute of Hotel Management is an experience of what Hospitality Education is meant to be.
