CAT is a national level management aptitude test conducted every year by the top management B-schools which are the IIMs primarily to screen, evaluate and shortlist the candidates for Post Graduate Management Programmes. It is an online exam for students who aspire to pursue their higher education and have an inclination towards Management.
CAT is an entrance examination to get into the most premier institutes, generally called Business Schools and enroll themselves into courses for pursuing PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) casually known as MBA(Master of Business Administration). The exam is conducted annually by any one IIM on a rotational basis. This year the CAT 2016 exam was conducted by IIM Bangalore on 4th December(Sunday). All About IIM
Indian Institute of Management is a group of 20 autonomous bodies of management education and research courses in India. IIMs are the premier most institutes. The IIMs were established by the joint decision of Planning Commission and Indian Government. It was initiated by Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1961 with the foundation of the first IIM in Calcutta, popularly known as IIM Calicut.
IIMs are delivering courses in Post-Graduate, Doctoral, and executive programs. All programs are fully residential PGDM (Post-Graduate Diploma in Management) being the flagship course of the institutes.

The eligibility criteria for the aspirants for application in CAT 2017
- The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA
- The candidate should be a citizen of India
- Candidates applying should fulfill any one of the following conditions:
- Completed Bachelor’s degree with the required percentage of marks
- Completed professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA) with required percentage
- Should be in the final year of Bachelor’s degree with required percentage
- There is no upper/lower age limit for the aspirants of CAT
CAT 2017 Eligibility Verification
If a candidate is selected by IIMs for interviews, the below eligibility criteria has to be fulfilled in that case:
- Mark sheets and Degree certificates to be submitted along with attested copies to prove his/her eligibility at the time of the interview.
- Reservation Category requires submitting their original caste/class certificate along with attested copies of the same
- Candidates who are in final year of graduation are required to submit their original certificate from the Principal/ Registrar/ Director of the University/Institution that he/she has obtained 50% or equivalent marks.
The above points only reflect upon the eligibility to enter the gateway of selection. However, the selection process depends on the personal instincts of the candidate as there are certain rounds to get finally into an IIM.
CAT 2017 Application Process
To apply in CAT 2017 the online registration will start in the month of August for a month. Candidates who aspire to apply can visit the official website of CAT https://iimcat.ac.in/. Candidates can apply by registering themselves on the website by entering the information and filling all the required fields. The application fee of INR 1600 only requires being submitted to complete the registration process.
Note: Application fee for SC/ST/PWD candidates is INR 800 only.
The candidates are required to upload the below important documents while application.
- Scanned passport sized photograph with a memory size of less than 80 kb.
- Scanned signature with a memory size of less than 80 kb.
- Self Attested copies of certificates for NC-OBC/SC/ST /PWD/DA in pdf format
After completion of the registration process, candidates are not allowed to edit or change the fields in the form which will be subsequently assumed as the final application. Options are however given to edit/change/modify the information furnished in the application form before submitting the form. Candidates should make sure that the information they furnished is true and correct.
After registration, an application number will be generated which the candidates will save so that they can access the account later with the provided User Name and User ID.
CAT 2017 Admit Card
The admit card can be downloaded in the month of October 2017. The admit card can be downloaded from the official website of CAT. The admit card will not be sent to the candidate’s postal address. The Admit card should comprise the Candidates name, Date of the exam, Venue details of the test center, City, User ID, and roll no.
CAT 2017 Pattern
The sectional pattern of the paper is simple constituting 3 sections:
- Section I: Verbal ability & Reading ability
- Section II: Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
- Section III: Quantitative Ability
The duration of the paper is 180 minutes. The pattern is completely in the form of multiple choice questions and candidates will be allotted 60 minutes for each section individually. The important point to note is that candidates will not be able to switch the sections before completing all the questions of one section completely. The paper is conducted in 2 sessions on one day. CAT Participating Institutes
Besides IIMs there are other top B-schools who also consider CAT score card and are rated on the basis of certain criteria like Faculty, Programmes offered, Ratio of students to staff, Diversity of students, Course content ratings, Geographic region, and most importantly the placement program and the average salaries. However, personal preferences about cost, fee, location etc are the factors which are to be considered before making a selection of a Business School.
