A little note on Self awareness

At the centre of your being

You have the answer:

You know who you are

and you know what you want.

-Lao Tzu

In order to understand what is self awareness, we must first know what is awareness. The dictionary meaning of awareness is to have knowledge, to have an understanding, to be conscious of. It also means knowledge gained through one’s own perception.

Self-awareness means awareness of your own individuality. It is a clear understanding of your own self. You become aware of yourself when you know your own strengths, your weaknesses, your beliefs, your emotions, your fears, your likes and dislikes, etc. When you become aware of your own self, you can begin to understand other people and how they perceive you. You will also begin to understand your own reactions to other people.

So why do we need to develop self-awareness?

Self-awareness forms an essential part of Emotional Intelligence. When you start developing self-awareness, you learn to change your thoughts. You also start to make different interpretations of situations. This in turn results in changes in your emotions.

Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.- C.G. Jung

Self-awareness is the first step in deciding what you want. When you start the process of setting your goal(s), the first thing that you should do is to become aware of your own self. Only if you are aware of yourself, you can set such goals that will give you complete satisfaction. But you cannot develop self awareness by reading a book. It has to be practiced by focusing your attention on your own personality and behavior.  And you will see that as you pay more attention to your own self, you will become more aware of aspects of yourself that you did not know existed. And you can make a conscious effort of making changes to those aspects that may be undesirable.

Finally in the words of C. Joybell C. –

The person in life that you will always be with the most is yourself. Because even when you are with others, you are still with yourself, too! When you wake up in the morning, you are with yourself, lying in bed at night you are with yourself, walking down the street in the sunlight you are with yourself. What kind of person do you want to walk down the street with? What kind of person do you want to wake up in the morning with? What kind of person do you want to see at the end of the day before you fall asleep? Because that person is yourself, and it’s your responsibility to be that person you want to be with. I know I want to spend my life with a person who knows how to let things go, who’s not full of hate, who’s able to smile and be carefree. So that’s who I have to be.
