Why Most of the Engineers Crack CAT? Here is the Detailed Analysis

The authorities have released the result of the Common Admission Test (CAT). Consequently, one can conclude from the result that just like previous years, engineers secured top positions this year also. The 11 candidates who scored 100 percentile in CAT are all B.E. / B.Tech graduates. Based on an advertisement released, around 55% percent of candidates who applied for CAT Exam 2018 are from an engineering background. Out of these 55% candidates, 82% scored 90 percentile and above. This naturally raises the question of why most of the time, the engineers crack CAT?

Analysis of CAT 2018

If we look at the previous year’s result, we can say that around 20 candidates scored 100 percentiles. Out of these 20, 17 are from an engineering background. In 2016, all the top scorers were engineers whereas, in 2015, around 1.79 lakh candidates appeared in CAT. Out of these 1.79 lakh candidates, 1.12 lakh were from B.E./B.Tech background. India has 20 IIMs that offer admission to over 4,000 management aspirants into their flagship two-year management programmes.

Most of the students with an engineering background usually focus on pursuing an engineering-MBA combination and start their preparation accordingly. Students from other streams generally don’t opt for MBA.

Most of the students from non-engineering background feel that the examination pattern of CAT is engineer friendly. They believe that only the students having engineering background can crack this one of the toughest examinations i.e. CAT. There was one Ms. Snehalata Mitra, a B.Com. student who appeared for CAT. She finds Quantitative Aptitude and DILR sections more difficult as compared to the other sections. She opined that engineers are able to perform better in such examinations because of their familiarity with these subjects. Ms. Mitra stated that they study these or these kinds of subjects from their school days itself. She also asked the examination authorities to bring down the difficulty level of this examination for the non-engineering background candidates.

According to Mr. Sumanta Basu, an alumnus of IIM-Calcutta, CAT usually focuses on testing the competency level. The candidates require this competency for taking managerial decision-making. Therefore the authorities design the questions based on this competency. This doesn’t favor any one stream. Though Mr. Basu believes that IIMs are not biased, but last year’s data tell us another story. Studying it, we can easily say that 87% of students of the 2018-20 PGP batch of IIM-Calcutta are engineers. However, from last few years, IIMs are focusing on breaking the myth that they only admit engineers. To break this myth, IIMs have started enrolling aspirants from diverse backgrounds. Still, engineers dominate the seats in IIMs.

Rickshesh Manchanda is a CAT 2018 topper and an IIT-Delhi student. He said that from Class 11 itself he was in the habit of regularly appearing for mock tests. To get admission to the engineering institutes, students have to crack one of the toughest examinations such as JEE on the national level and other State entrance exams. This helps them to face any sort of competition in their life. Regularly solving mock tests will be able to help students in increasing their confidence level. Also, the projects assigned to them while pursuing B.Tech course demands Research and preparation on their own. By practicing on their own, they will be able to handle their work alone and this makes them independent.

As per the statements made by experts, engineering students perform much better in CAT or they are in an advantage as they are exceptionally good at Mathematics and in solving problems. Also, they are good at handling the competitive examinations as they have an experience of appearing in numerous examinations.

As per the statements made by the IIM-Calcutta professor, the success rate of engineers is higher than that of the students from another background not only in CAT but also in other competitive entrance examinations. When talking about CAT 2017, which the IIM-Lucknow conducted, the question paper was pretty easier. However, the number of candidates from the Engineering background cracking CAT was pretty higher than that in 2017. This year, the authorities enrolled 87.5% of students from an engineering background in the MBA program in IIMs. This figure was 89% in 2016.

So, based on above-mentioned data, it’s wise to say that engineers are among the toppers of CAT. But it totally depends on a student’s caliber and how much hard work he/ she put into his/ her preparation. So, whether you are from an engineering background or from a non-engineering background, just trust your hard work and keep faith in your capabilities. Only these things will help you in cracking CAT examination.
