CAT 2017 Result – Normalization of Score and Percentile
IIMs follow the “Percentile Equivalence” formula for normalizing the CAT score. A percentile, calculated based on CAT normalisation process that IIMs adopt, is a measure, which is used to indicate the value under which a given percentage of a test taker falls. Following the CAT 2017 marking scheme, the answers will be checked and a total score will be determined. This score will then be adjusted through a process called “equating”. Here this score shall be normalized across different sections. Thereafter the normalized score obtained by the candidates shall further be converted into CAT 2017 percentiles for the purposes of short-listing.
What after CAT 2017 Result Announcement?
Based on the CAT 2017 percentile, the candidates must apply to Non-IIMs as applying to IIMs is not required. The candidates must keep a check on the application dates of various other renowned B-schools, where they wish to seek admission and apply accordingly.
Selection on the basis of CAT 2017 Result
The selection process for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is an extremely rigorous process that requires quite a lot of preparation. The further selection rounds of IIMs and B-schools involve a written test and personal interview rounds. Each IIM will the send interview letters to the shortlisted candidates directly. To understand the process in a better way, let’s break the IIM selection process into 3 stages, which are as follow –
Stage 1 – Common Admission Test (CAT)
The first step is to write CAT (or even the GMAT for foreign nationals). The purpose of CAT exam is to sift out candidates for the final interview. The criteria for getting a call from IIM is discussed below and it varies from one IIM to other. The CAT 2017 cutoff percentile for each IIM is released and provided in its admission criteria document. Candidates obtaining equal to or more than this cutoff are only considered for shortlisting.
Stage 2 – Written Ability Test and Personal Interview
A written ability test is conducted for each of the shortlisted candidates. Thereafter, personal interview at the IIMs is usually taken by the group of people associated with the IIM, be it the faculty, ex-faculty or in some cases even alumni. The interviews are generally very open-ended and very contrary to what most people believe, not random. Everything they ask is related to the candidate, their profile or something that relates to their academic background or them only.
In an IIM interview, the candidates should try putting their case forward as to what they can bring to the institute, how they can contribute to the learning process and how their experience makes them well equipped to pick up what will be taught.
Stage 3 – Conversion of IIM Call into Final Selection
Every institute has laid down certain criteria for selection, where CAT score, academic history and performance in interview etc. are taken into consideration. Based on the IIM admission criteria, points are awarded to the candidates based on their attributes and the candidates will high total score is finally selected.
CAT 2017 Result and Scoring Process
To get a high score in CAT 2017 result, candidates have to go through three sections that include Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR) and Quantitative Ability (QA). Each of the section contained 34, 32 and 34 questions respectively, thereby taking a total number of questions to 100. Each question contained 3 marks and there is negative marking too which is not applicable to non-MCQ type questions.
