Most of the exams like SSC-CGL, IBPS PO, CAT, GRE Exams demand a vocabulary test. If you’re preparing for any of the exams that are mentioned above, you’ll need to learn a set of new words to succeed. It has been seen that most of the words that come in the exam are oft-repeated. Hence, learning the words that came in previous years exams will get good grades in the exam.
Here are some very important words with their synonyms and examples:
1. Prerogative (noun)-परमाधिकार, सुविधा-प्राप्त होनेवाला
Meaning: a right or privilege exclusive to a particular individual or class.
Synonyms: entitlement, right, privilege, advantage, due, a birthright.
Example: Since he was a senior member of the Gymkhana Club, Ajay had the prerogative to accept or reject a new member’s application.
2. Embodiment (noun)-अवतार
Meaning: a tangible or visible form of an idea, quality, or feeling.
Synonyms: personification, incarnation, incorporation, realization, manifestation, expression, representation, actualization, concretization, symbol, symbolization.
Example: The Chief Justice is the embodiment of moral authority of the entire judicial system.
3. Probity (noun)-ईमानदारी, सत्यनिष्ठा
Meaning: the quality of having strong moral principles; honesty and decency.
Synonyms: integrity, honesty, uprightness, decency, morality, rectitude, goodness, virtue, right-mindedness, trustworthiness, truthfulness, honour, honourableness, justice, fairness, equity.
Example: John James Ruskin, a typical Scot, of remarkable energy, probity and foresight, built up a great business, paid off his father’s debts, formed near London a most hospitable and cultured home, where he maintained his taste for literature and art, and lived and died, as his son proudly wrote upon his tomb, “an entirely honest merchant.
4. Whataboutery (noun)-आरोप-प्रत्यारोप
Meaning: the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.
Example: The situation demanded statesmanship — unfortunately, the Court engaged in whataboutery, raising the spectre of contempt of court, only to drop it finally.
5. Genesis (noun)-उत्पत्ति
Meaning: the origin or mode of formation of something.
Synonyms: origin, source, root, beginning, commencement, start, outset
Example:
- Genesis is the first chapter of the Bible’s Old Testament.
- For years, scientists and religious leaders have argued about the truth of mankind’s origin or genesis.
- Many historians view the Boston Tea Party as the genesis that set the American Revolution in motion.
6.Moot (adjective)-विवादास्पद
Meaning: subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty.
Synonyms: debatable, open to debate, open to discussion, questionable, at issue, open to question, open, doubtful, open to doubt, disputable, contestable, controvertible, problematic, problematical, controversial, contentious, vexed, disputed, unresolved, unsettled, up in the air, undecided, yet to be decided, undetermined, unconcluded.
Example: It is moot whether the Bench entrusted by the Chief Justice would ensure justice or not — the critical point is that such a Bench chosen by the Chief Justice was congenitally defective.
7. Plausible (adjective)-प्रशंसनीय, संभाव्य
Meaning: (of an argument or statement) Seeming reasonable or probable.
Synonyms: credible, reasonable, believable, likely, feasible, probable, tenable, possible, conceivable, imaginable, within the bounds of possibility, convincing, persuasive, cogent, sound, rational, logical, acceptable, thinkable.
Example: This episode of plausible administrative impropriety was unfortunately compounded by the Chief Justice constituting a five-judge Bench, including himself, to hear the matter on the judicial side.
8. Suffice (verb)-पर्याप्त होना
Meaning: be enough or adequate.
Synonyms: be enough, be sufficient, be adequate, do, serve, meet requirements, satisfy demands, answer/ fulfill/meet one’s needs, answer/serve the purpose, pass muster.
Example: Again, whether the right decision was reached or not is moot — a decision was reached in which the Chief Justice was unarguably judged in his own cause. That itself suffices to make this judgment bad in law.
9. Cardinal (adjective)-आधारभूत
Meaning: of the greatest importance; fundamental.
Synonyms: fundamental, basic, main, chief, primary, prime, principal, premier, first, leading, capital, paramount, pre-eminent.
Example: The principle implicit in the rule of law that the executive must act under the law and not by its own fiat is still a cardinal principle of the common law system, which is being followed by India.
10. Tenet (noun)-सिद्धांत
Meaning: a principle or belief, especially one of the main principles of a religion or philosophy.
Synonyms: principle, belief, doctrine, precept, creed, credo, article of faith, dogma, canon, rule.
Example: Although there can scarcely be any argument against it as a tenet of judicial discipline, it would be naive to consider it an absolute principle of justice delivery.
Remember: Use flashcards or post-it notes around your house
An effective way of learning new words is by implementing some memorizing techniques in your learning methodology. You can write new words on slips or flash cards. You can either stick it to corners which you often look at. You can also affix or hang those slips on your almirahs.
While graduating I myself used to stick paper chits with new words on the leaves of a money plant. I repeated them while watering and had achieved tremendous results with the help of this technique.
There is an old yet very effective technique of connecting words with pictures of famous or infamous personalities. It can help you to connect with a certain. For instance, one can relate the word “humanitarian”, which means truthfulness, with the image of Abdul Sattar Edhi. Similarly, the word “quick-witted,’’ which means ‘’quick-thinking,’’ can be associated with Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
Note:
In case you have sufficient preparation time it is recommended that first, you make a newspaper reading habit. Slowly, you will be able to read the whole newspaper. All SSC exams require reading any good English newspaper with simple language.
A good vocabulary not only will help you in beating an exam but also promises to build a bright future. There are many newspapers available for your perusal, like The Hindu, The Indian Express or even the Times of India. It is better to keep it in your bag and whenever you get time to try to read it completely. Keep reading it till you finish it. Mark difficult words and note them down in a notebook dedicated to the vocabulary.
