Essay on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission was launched by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2014 at Rajghat (cremation of Bapu) in New Delhi.
The Clean India Drive
This national campaign or drive was launched by the Indian Government to clean around 4041 statutory towns. The main aim is to maintain cleanliness of streets, roads and the infrastructure of the country. While launching the event Prime Minister himself participated in cleaning the road to further promote it. It is the biggest cleanliness drives in India where approximately 3 million government employees including students from schools and colleges took part in various cleanliness activities.
On the day of the event’s launch, the PM himself nominated the name of some nine famous personalities to participate in the cleanliness drive in their own cities.
An Estimated Cost
The mission is estimated to cost around 62,009 crore rupees, of which 14,623 crore rupees will be borne by the Union Government
Students’ Participation
Many college and school students have passionately participated in the event by organizing many cleanliness activities as per their own themes. The PM had also requested to all those nine nominees to call another nine people separately to participate in this cleanliness drive. This could continue the chain of calling nine people by each and every participating candidate of the mission. And this was to continue until the message reaches to every Indian in every corner of the country. The mission aimed to connect Indians from all walks of life.
Building Individual Sanitary Latrines for Household
Swachh Bharat mission also aimed to construct individual sanitary latrines for household purposes for the people living under poverty line. The plan was to convert dry latrines into low-cost sanitary latrines, provide facility of hand pumping, safe and secure bathing, set up sanitary marts, construct drains, disposal of solid and liquid wastes, enhance health and education awareness, provide household and environmental sanitation facilities etc.
Efforts by Earlier Governments
Many earlier awareness programmes, such as Total Sanitation Campaign, Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, etc) were also meant for the environmental sanitation and personal cleanliness. However, they could not create an impact of this level.
The main objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are to:
- Remove the trend of open defecation
- Change insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets
- Remove manual scavenging
- Proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes
- Bring behavioral changes among people
- Enhance awareness about sanitation
- Facilitating the participation of private sectors towards cleanliness facilities
Warning for officials Chewing Paan Masala in Government Offices
Livid at the sight of betel juice stained-walls of the building that houses the CM’s office, Yogi “advised” not to consume paan and tobacco products in schools, colleges, hospitals and other government buildings. He also prohibited the use of plastic.
Tax for Swachh Bharat
To make this campaign successful, the Finance Ministry of India has started a programme named Swachh Bharat cess. According to this, everyone must pay .5% more service tax on all the services in India (50 paise per 100 rupees) which will go to this cleanliness campaign. It became effective from 15 November 2015.
Conclusion
We hope the spirit of clean India will not die away like earlier drives like Nirmal Bharat and will be effective to make India a beautiful and clean India.
