Important update about UGC NET

Brief Introduction

According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), the National Eligibility Test (NET) is going to take place from June 20 to 28, 2019. The board will be holding the test on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). That’s why the candidates popularly know it as UGC NET. NTA, which is the test conducting body on behalf of the UGC, conducts the test two times in a year. It does it to select candidates for only Assistant Professorship (AP) or for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and AP, both. The board conducts the test for the AP and JRF aspirants. These are the aspirants who want to teach and do research, respectively, in Indian universities and higher education colleges. For this reason, NTA conducts UGC NET in a total of 84 subjects at 91 selected UGC NET Examination Cities/centers. The UGC selects these centers from across the country.

Changes in UGC NET 2019

There is the latest notable news about UGC NET 2019. From 2019 onwards, the exam will not have the 30 min break in between the two papers. That is Paper 1 and 2 won’t have the break that they enjoyed earlier. NTA will hold the exam in a single session of 3 hours consisting of Paper 1 and 2, both. After a duration of 1 hour for paper 1, the Agency will give 2 hours for conducting paper 2. Till 2018, UGC NET enjoyed a 30 min break for lunch after the holding of Paper 1. But, the element of arbitrariness in providing this 30 min break for different papers, somehow crept in. Consequently, the NTA (erstwhile overseen by CBSE) decided to do away with this facility.

And Some More Changes

Till 2017, the UGC NET authorities patterned the exam in three sittings, namely, Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3. But, the authorities brought in a change in this pattern in 2018. Now, the UGC NET 2019 candidates require to take the test of two papers only.

Also, it is notable that UGC generally declares around 6% of UGC NET aspirants as successful for being APs. Furthermore, it also implements the policy of reservation from this 6%. UGC does it for the candidates belonging to the SC, ST, OBC, and PwD categories.

New Changes in the UGC NET Exam 2019 in a Nut Shell

• The UGC NET Exam 2019 will be having 2 papers – Paper I and Paper II– instead of earlier 3 papers.
• The second paper (Paper II) will be having 100 objective questions of 2 marks each. Thus, its total score will amount to 200 marks.
• UGC has increased the age-limit for JRF to 30 years, from the earlier 28 years.
• There is an update regarding the syllabi of the exam. Talking of Paper 1, there is an addition of Swayam, Swayamprabha, and MOOCs modes of online methods of teaching. These additions fall under the Methods of Teaching in Institutes of Higher Learning section, which falls under Unit I.
• Furthermore, the entire syllabi for Evaluation Systems of Unit I under Paper I have been removed. Similarly, the syllabi falling under from Unit II to V has been removed.

Examination Pattern of UGC NET 2019

UGC NET Paper I comprises 50 objective questions which will be compulsory and carrying 2 marks for each of them. Meanwhile, these questions, which are general in nature, test the teaching and research aptitude of the UGC NET 2019 candidate. Also, the UGC NET 2019 authorities intend to test the candidates on various basis. Hence, they test candidates’ comprehension level, reasoning ability, general awareness, and divergent thinking through Paper I of UGC NET.

Similarly, UGC NET Paper II contains 100 objective natured questions which also are compulsory. Each of these objectively answerable questions carries 2 marks. Moreover, the questions of UGC NET Paper II are based on the subject chosen by the UGC NET 2019 candidate.

Regarding the new pattern, Paper II will include syllabuses of Paper II and III of 2017 and prior to it. And, this includes all electives, without options. Furthermore, UGC NET 2019 candidates will need to take the exam through the mode of computers. Therefore, the test will be a Computer Based Test (CBT).

Meanwhile, UGC NET 2019 candidates must keep in mind that the authorities won’t inform them about instructions, through the post.

The Alteration in the Exam Pattern for UGC NET 2019

Meanwhile, as per an official notification released by the NTA, it has changed the exam pattern of UGC NET. This change is contrary to the pattern of the exam till 2017. From 2018 onwards, UGC NET exam has two different papers. These are Paper I and Paper II, in two sessions. For being the JRF and/or AP, the UGC NET 2019 candidates need to appear in these two papers. In a nutshell, the exam pattern is as following:

To remind you again, Paper I tests reasoning ability, comprehension, and divergent thinking of the UGC NET 2019 candidates. It also tests the general awareness of these candidates. Similarly, questions of Paper II will be compulsory. The paper will cover the entire syllabus of Paper II & Paper III. These were the papers which were there before 2018 (including all electives, without options).

Registration/Application Procedure for UGC NET 2019

The requirement of Proof of Identity for the Applicants of UGC-NET (July) 2019

Meanwhile, the UGC NET aspirants will not need Aadhar, to prove their identity when filling online application form of UGC NET (July) 2019 exam, but other documents. We have mentioned the important details below:

The UGC NET 2019 candidates will need to submit any of the below-mentioned documents, along with the online application form, for proving his/her identity:

• Ration Card/Passport/Bank Account No. or other valid Government ID (such as Driving License/Voter ID etc.).

Application Form Details for UGC NET

To apply, the UGC NET aspirants will need to go only into the online mode through the NTA website http://www.ntanet.nic.in.

Hence, for applying online, UGC NET 2019 candidates essentially need to use scanned images of themselves and their documents. The details of these are provided below:

1. Passport size photograph in JPG format of minimum 4kb to 40 kb. Furthermore, the dimension of the photograph should be 3.5 cm (width) x 4.5 cm (height)
2. Signature in JPG format of minimum 4kb to 30 kb; moreover, the dimension of the signature should be 3.5 cm (width) x 1.5 cm (height)

After filling all the meticulous details of themselves, the UGC NET 2019 candidates will need to go for the payment of the examination fee through two modes. They are offline mode and online mode. The offline mode of fee-payment remains the main concern in applying for the competitive exams these days. Hence, we shall throw light on the same. Therefore, in the offline mode, UGC NET 2019 candidates can pay the fee either by their debit/credit cards or through the system-generated e-challan (when they were in the process of applying online). The candidates must carefully fill all the necessary monetary and other details therein and accordingly follow the process.

More Information Regarding Application Procedure

In addition, the NTA also requires that UGC NET 2019 candidates bring a photo Id card as well as the printout of their online admission card on the examination day.

Prior to your going to the mode of online application, we advise you to carefully study the elaborated notification of the exam available on the NTA website.

Please note that the NTA will summarily reject the fee of the UGC NET submitted through other modes like Money Order, Demand Draft or IPO, etc.

We also advise the UGC NET 2019 candidates to apply sufficiently early enough, to avert the last-minute rush. The NTA won’t take responsibility for the problems occurring in between the online application process. These problems can be from like, hanging off the computer-systems of the banks to network problems of the Internet Service Providers and others.

Marking scheme in UGC NET

The UGC NET authorities will give 2 marks for every correct answer. Also, replying answers in wrong won’t cost the UGC NET, 2019 candidates, anything. That is, there is no negative marking in the exam.

The UGC NET 2019 authority, the NTA, will be releasing the admit cards on May 15, 2019. The UGC NET 2019 candidates can download the admit cards or hall tickets from the official website ntanet.nic.in. The detailed procedure of downloading admit card is being provided below:

4. Enter the necessary details and click on “Submit.”
5. Download the admit card and take its printout for future reference.

Eligibility for UGC NET 2019

• Regarding the minimum % of marks for the General category UGC NET 2019 candidates, it is 55% (no rounding off allowed). They must have a Master’s Degree OR a degree in the equivalent examination. This degree or its equivalent must be recognized by UGC.
• Regarding the minimum % of marks for the UGC NET 2019 candidates of the Other Backward Classes belonging to non-creamy layer (OBC-NCL)/Scheduled Caste(SC)/Scheduled Tribe(ST)/ persons with disability(PwD) category, it is 50% (no rounding off allowed).
• UGC NET aspirants who haven’t yet completed their Master’s Degree (are in the final year of the course) and are pursuing it, can also give the UGC NET exam. Also, the UGC NET 2019 authorities have allowed the eligibility for similar candidates as above. These are the candidates whose results are awaited and whose final PG exams have been delayed. Though, it is quite meaningful to remind that such candidates’ admissions will be strictly provisional. UGC will award the fellowship and the professorship, only after they complete the course of Master’s Degree. Such UGC NET 2019 candidates are amply provided the time-limit of 2years (from the date of the result-declaration) to do it.
• UGC NET 2019 authorities have also entitled the candidates belonging to the third gender (transgenders, in other words) to get discounts. They get the same discounts in fee, age and the criteria regarding qualification for the NET exam (JRF and AP), as the candidates of the reserved categories avail. Furthermore, the subject wise cut-offs for this category should be the lowest among those for SC/ST/PwD/OBC –NCL categories in the corresponding subject.

Some More Guidelines over Eligibility

• UGC NET 2019 candidates with Master’s Degree in Geography (with specialization in Population Studies) or Mathematics/ Statistics have been provided an extra facility. They are also eligible to appear in the subject of Population Studies.
• Similarly, the UGC NET 2019 candidates with Master’s Degree in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences are eligible to appear in the subject of Women-Studies.
• The Ph.D. degree holders will get a relaxation of 5% in total marks from authorities. This means they need to have 50%, instead of 55% (for General-category UGC NET 2019 candidates). Similarly, UGC NET 2019 candidates of the reserved category need to carry 45%, in place of the earlier 50%. But, this relaxation comes with a condition. This discount is for the Ph.D. holders who completed their Master’s Degree course before September 20, 1991(irrespective of the date of declaration of result).
• UGC NET authorities suggest the NET aspirants appear in their “post-graduation” subject only. This doesn’t mean that UGC NET 2019 candidates who don’t find “their” subject, can’t apply for the exam. They certainly can do it by appearing in the “related subject ” of “the subject” of their post-graduation.
• Also, the NTA greatly discourages UGC NET 2019 candidates from sending their documents/certificates related to the “eligibility” of the candidates. Similarly, it doesn’t demand printouts of their filled application forms (Confirmation Page). However, UGC NET 2019 candidates, in their own interest, must satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the Test. If the NTA finds any ineligibility at any stage, it may cancel the candidature of the candidate. Legal action may also be taken against such a UGC NET 2019 candidate.

Age Limit and Relaxation for UGC NET

1. For Junior Research Fellowship

• As on July 1, 2019, the age of the UGC NET 2019 candidate (General) must not exceed that of 30 years. However, the UGC NET 2019 candidates fulfilling the following conditions are free to avail the relaxation of 3 to 5 years, in age.
• Firstly, UGC NET 2019 candidates belonging to the Reserved categories of the OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Transgender and the women 2019 candidates, are free to avail the relaxation of 5 years. Secondly, UGC NET 2019 candidates who have the experience of the research-work, are liable to avail the discount of 5 years. For this, all such UGC NET 2019 candidates require to produce a certificate/document, certified by the competent authorities, in favor of their fulfilling respective conditions.
• Similarly, a discount of 5 years is provided to the UGC NET candidates who have served the armed forces. But this facility is directly proportional to the period of their service. Also, the length of the service of such UGC NET 2019 candidates is counted for up to the first day of the month of UGC NET examination.
• Moreover, there is a relaxation of 3 years for the UGC NET 2019 candidates who hold the L.L.M. degree.

Hence, concludingly, it can be said that the UGC NET authorities provide a reduction in age from 3 up to a maximum of 5 years, on the above-mentioned grounds.

2. For Assistant Professorship

• UGC NET 2019 Candidate of any category and age can apply for the professorship. There is no restriction on age-limit for being an assistant professor, that is to say.

Exemption (Eligibility for the assistant professor)

• For the UGC NET 2019 candidates needing recruitment and appointment as Assistant Professors in different Universities/Colleges/ Institutions, NET/SET/SLET shall remain the minimum eligibility.
• NET aspirants who have passed the UGC/CSIR/JRF exam before 1989, also get exempted by the NTA.

For SET Candidates: The authorities have exempted the UGC NET aspirants who have qualified SET (State Eligibility Test) before June 1, 2002. But the facility is restricted to the candidates who have qualified the SET on and after June 1, 2002. Such UGC NET 2019 candidates can apply in the states of their “SET qualification.”

Examination Fee and Payment Mode in UGC NET

The UGC NET 2019 candidates can make the examination fee-payment in two ways. Firstly, paying through credit/debit cards. Or secondly, by paying through the e-challans generated by the banks when going through the online filing of the application form. Meanwhile, they must remember that the last date of payment of fee through bank-generated e-challans is, April 01, 2019.

In the event of generating e-challans from banks, UGC NET 2019 candidates have the options to make payments either through the Syndicate Bank, the Canara Bank or through the ICICI bank only.

Similarly, if the UGC NET 2019 candidates choose to make payments through the credit or debit card, the UGC NET authorities will charge additionally, on the pretext of processing fee. These charges are as following:

By making payment through Credit cards, a total of 1.20% of the exam-fee + service tax, as applicable.

By making payment through Debit cards, a total of 0.75% of the exam-fee + service tax, as applicable.

Some More Points on Fee Payment

The UGC NET authorities essentially require that the candidates confirm the status of fee-payment at the official website (www.ntanet.nic.in). The “OK” status means that the fee-payment by the UGC NET 2019 candidates has been done either by the online or by the offline mode. The candidates can now take the printout of the Confirmation Page. In contrast, if the fee-payment status isn’t “OK,” the candidates need to do the following, as per their mode of fee-payment:

• Firstly, for the UGC NET 2019 candidates who have paid their fee by generating e-challans through the above-mentioned banks, they must immediately contact the concerned banks and make updates to their fee-status on the NTA official website.
• Secondly, for the UGC NET 2019 candidates who have paid their fee through the credit/debit cards, they need to make a second payment of the fee. This is because the first incident when they paid the fee, the payment got canceled. Consequently, such UGC NET 2019 candidates also need to ask concerned banks to make updates to their fee-status on the NTA official website.

Note: The UGC NET authorities will not entertain fee-payment by any other modes like money order, demand draft, IPO, etc. and will outrightly reject it. Also, fee-payment once done, will not be canceled and the fee won’t be returned to the UGC NET 2019 candidate.

UGC NET Application & Registration Form 2019

To get themselves registered for UGC NET 2019 exam, the UGC NET 2019 candidates must essentially fill the application form in the online mode.

So, in order to fill the UGC NET 2019 application form through the internet-based mode (online mode), The aspirants need to log in the official NTA website and click the “Apply for NET 2019” link. This will guide you to a new page on which the UGC NET 2019 candidates need to click “Proceed to Apply Online” link. Thereafter, the candidates need to follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Filling UGC NET Application Form

Firstly, the UGC NET 2019 candidates need to pay attention to the below-mentioned details:

Details related to the exam: Firstly, UGC NET 2019 candidates will have to decide and accordingly select their preference for UGC NET exam centers. They will need to select their subject and the designation (of JR Fellowship or Assistant Fellowship or both).

Personal information: This section covers details of the UGC NET 2019 candidates such as their names, genders, parents’ names, mobile numbers e-mail addresses, dates of birth, etc.

Mailing address: This requires that UGC NET 2019 candidates fill their postal addresses, to make the posts and mails reach to them.

Permanent address: This also requires that UGC NET 2019 candidates fill their postal addresses, to make the posts and mails reach to them. The difference between the two kinds of addresses is of duration. While a “mailing” address can refer to your residence which can be temporary (maybe you are living on rent), the “permanent” address refers to your residence which you own and in which you live since a long time.

Educational qualification: In this section, UGC NET 2019 candidates need to fill their details like the subject of their postgraduate exam, the status of post-graduation (whether appearing or passed), the name of the university, the year of completing post-graduation, the status of MPhil and Ph.D. (still pursuing or have completed), etc.

Generating password: This section needs the UGC NET 2019 candidates to create their passwords.

Security pin: Here UGC NET 2019 candidates need to fill up the security pin already present on the page.

Thus, having filled all their details, UGC NET 2019 candidates must press the “Next” button and the internet-based computer system will guide them to a new page.

Step 2: Uploading Images and Signature

Secondly, in the redirected new page, UGC NET 2019 candidates are required to upload their scanned images and signature. These scanned images and signatures should be in JPEG format, as described below.

Step 3: Pay UGC NET Application Fee

UGC NET 2019 Candidates can pay UGC NET 2019 application fee in two ways- online and offline. Again, there are two ways to pay the fee offline:

Through Bank Challan: Firstly, the UGC NET 2019 candidates need to select a bank (for instance, Syndicate/Canara/ICICI) to deposit the application fee. This will result in an automatic generation of an e-challan. Next, they must obtain the printout of the e-challan and provide it to the nearest branch of the selected bank.

Through Debit/Credit card: Such UGC NET 2019 candidates need to pay the application fee through the debit/credit cards, who want to pay it electronically. Hence, they must go for this option which is there on the page.

Step 4: Download the Confirmation Page

Lastly, the UGC NET 2019 candidates must take a printout of the Confirmation Page and keep it for future reference. It may be needed for various tasks.

UGC NET Cut Offs of Past Years

The exam conducting body for the UGC NET, the NTA, publishes cut-offs in its portal according to the prescribed schedule. The authority releases these cutoffs based on subjects and categories, both. These cut-offs are published both for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professorship.

The Factors for UGC NET Cut-Offs That Make the Difference

The following factors influence the cut-offs and eventually the seat-availability.

Minimum Marks for NET

The least marks essentially needed for JRF and AP are as following:

Note: Though, it is compulsory for UGC NET 2019 candidates to score minimum marks separately in each paper (I and II).

Merit List of the Qualifying Candidates

Only to qualify/pass the UGC NET exam is not enough. A candidate’s selection is also dependent on the level of the merit that is based on results of all the rest of the UGC NET 2019 candidates. This is where the critical factor of “more” marks comes into play. Though, it will be useful here to remind that this merit list is prepared using the aggregate marks of the two papers secured by the UGC NET 2019 candidates.

Selection for the Post of Assistant Professor Only

Thirdly, from the merit list declared above, around 6% of the UGC NET 2019 candidates (subject-wise and category-wise) are declared NET qualified for eligibility for Assistant Professor only.

Selection for Junior Research Fellowship

Moreover, from the list of NET qualified candidates, a separate merit list is prepared for the award of JRF using the formula mentioned below:

Note: Similarly, the NTA applies the same formula for OBC/ SC/ ST category and all the other subjects.

Procedure & Criteria for Declaration of UGC NET result

This contains the following stages:

Stage I

Around 6% of the total appearing candidates (in both the papers) qualify UGC NET.

Stage II

The total number of available seats are distributed in different categories, as per the directives of Government of India’s reservation policy.

Stage III

To be thought for both JRF+AP or for AP only, the general category candidates need to score 40% aggregate marks. And this is the least % that is needed. The UGC NET 2019 candidates need to score this % in both the papers taken together.

Similarly, for the reserved category of the UGC NET 2019 candidates, to be thought for both JRF+AP or for AP only, at least 35% aggregate marks are needed. These candidates also need to score this % in both the papers taken together.

Stage IV

To declare the number of qualified candidates for a subject (for instance, Economics) and for a category (for instance, SC category), the NTA uses the following technique of calculation:

Hence, the overall percentage of the two papers corresponding to the number of slots arrived at, shall determine the qualifying cut-off for Eligibility for Assistant Professor ‘in ‘Economics’ for the SC category. Similarly, the authorities shall employ the same yardstick for calculating the subject-wise qualifying cut-offs for all categories.

Stage V

Next, the UGC NET qualified candidates, determined from stage 4 and who had applied for “JRF+AP” will also be considered for JRF

Stage VI

Moreover, the total slots available for admission are subject to the reservation policies of the Government of India, for various categories. Thus, the program for allocation of JRF slots is also influenced by the factors of subjects and categories. This program has been described below:

In this way, the overall % of the two papers corresponding to the number of JRF slots will decide the passing cut-off for JRF for (for example) Economics for an ST category candidate. Similarly, the authorities use the same allocation procedure for all subjects and categories.

We will like to remind you that all the qualifying criteria governed by the UGC/NTA, are final and binding.

Provisions for Persons with 40% or More Disability (Including Visually Challenged Candidates)

• Physically Challenged UGC NET 2019 candidates (PwD) of UGC NET, who can’t take the test in their own handwriting, can also use the services of a scribe. This scribe can be arranged by the candidate himself/herself. Also, the UGC NET 2019 candidate can request the authorities to provide them such a scribe. For this, they need to request the UGC NET authorities (to the Centre-Superintendent, that is to say) in writing, at least a week before the date of the exam.

Though, we must inform other Physically Challenged candidates (Persons with Disability), that the facility of the scribe isn’t for them.

• In case, the UGC NET 2019 candidate opts for providing his/her own scribe, he/she needs to make sure to provide educational qualifications of that scribe to the Centre-Superintendent, at least a day before the test. Similarly, if the UGC NET 2019 candidate wants the services of the scribe from the UGC NET authorities, he/she needs to check the eligibility of the scribe by meeting him/her a day in advance of the test, by meeting the Center-Superintendent in that test center.

Though, it will be proper to mention here that a similar kind of facility is not provided by the UGC NET authorities, for the visually impaired UGC NET 2019 candidates. They are not provided any test booklet in Braille, that is to say.

Some More Provisions

• For the availing the services of the scribe, the PwD UGC NET 2019 candidates need to pay an extra amount of Rs. 1000/- ( One thousand only) to the Centre-Superintendent on the day of the exam. This amount is chargeable for all papers.
• The PwD UGC NET 2019 candidates need to mention the type and percentage of disability correctly in the online application form. Also, their disability certificate must be signed and approved by a competent authority. However, the types of disabilities are mentioned, as below:

1. Blindness and low vision
2. Deaf and hard of hearing
3. Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy
4. Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness;
5. Multiple disabilities from among persons under clauses (a) to (d) including deaf-blindness in the posts identified for each disability.

Note: Many students take Paper 1 of UGC NET very lightly. Hence, they prepare not much sincerely for it. But, it is dangerous to do so. Earlier, to qualify the UGC NET exam, it was just enough to score passing marks in Paper 1. But now this qualification is cut-off based, and these cut-offs vary every year. UGC NET 2019 Counseling Details

Procedure to participate in UGC NET counseling

1. The UGC NET candidates will first need to confirm their ranking in the merit declared by the authorities. Hence, they must make sure about the date, time and venue of their counseling, from the official UGC NET website.
2. Seat-availability for the UGC NET 2019 candidate depends on many factors like score/percentile of the candidate, his/her category and much more. Hence, he/she must be prepared mentally for any change in the plan of things. It may be that the candidate may have expected a better university and subject of his/her interest, but he/she was offered the same of lesser credentials.

Documents Required in the Counseling

The following documents are essentially required to be brought in the counseling:

1) Original counseling letter along with its photocopy.
2) Original Admit card along with its photocopy.
3) Bank draft of the required amount has to be made as per the guidelines mentioned on UGC NETprospect
4) All the certificates of 10th & 12th classes and at least 2 photocopies of each certificate.
5) Rank Card / Hall Ticket.
6) Scorecard (if applicable).
7) Original degree/provisional certificate ( if the candidate is appearing in the qualifying exam for UGC NET).
8 ) Certificate establishing the category of the UGC NET 2019 candidate (SC/ST/OBC/Other) signed by a competent authority.
9) Medical documents mentioned on UGC NET application form.
10) 4-6 Passport sized colored photographs or the black and white ones.
11) Other supportive documents mentioned on UGC NET information brochure.
