CHANGING YOUR STREAM OF EDUCATION AFTER PURSUING YOUR DEGREE

‘Nandini had been going over a proposal to alter her lifestyle since quite a few days. Well, the proposal had been put forward by her parents, although she herself had a role to play in it. She had already met Yash and his parents and to her surprise, she had come to understand them and to put in proper perspective, also like them. Initial stages are smooth, there is excitement, curiosity and eagerness that keeps the mind working but the introduction stage flew past, it was time to make a decision for Nandini.

She was clueless, scared and lost because this decision would change her life and she had been contemplating whether this would serve her purpose or not. There were so many ‘what ifs’ that kept dancing and creating crazy confusions in her brain. Not only had her parents met Yash’s family, but also inquired about him from various sources possible and the conclusion was their green signal. Her life was like a sinusoidal curve, there would be times when she would be confident enough to say yes to the marriage, but the trough periods were full of self-doubt, insecurities and trust issues and needless to say, the periodicity was bang on getting maintained. ..’

When it comes to changing education streams after getting some degree, the best example would be engineering students deciding to go into a B-school to pursue MBA. In today’s world, it is a norm to pursue MBA after engineering, some will do it after a few years of work experience and some would right away get into a B-school. However, there is always a doubt because it took years to perfect the mindset and the learning curve to gain some heights in a particular field be it electrical core, software development, plant maintenance and so on and so forth but then comes along the thought of pursuing an MBA. Earlier it would be a fleeting thought, a virus that had infected your mind but it would eat away other career thoughts and all that is left “Let’s get into a B-school.” Some actually have the whole marriage planned, unlike Nandini, but most of us are Nandini (applies to both males and females); it is definitely a life-changing decision but not just in terms of the favorable output that would be produced but in terms of the inputs that we have to put forward. For Nandini, it would be adjusting herself to a new family, sharing her life with a new person, moving to a completely new environment wherein her roles would also change and on top of it, get enough positivity and will power that the marriage becomes an eternal bond of friendship and partnership.

In short, not only the inputs change but also we should adapt to them and give the best outputs because ultimately everything is for our benefit. Yes, changing streams after getting a degree is a tough task because of the change however; it is not a fruitless step. Hailing from an engineering background has its own advantages like that of being accustomed to high stress, have a good threshold for adapting and also having an analytical framework. All this can be put to use in a B-school, but the first few months, it is more about adjusting to a new lifestyle, same as post-marriage. The environment that is present in the college is mesmerizing for all those who are aspirants; they crave for that atmosphere but who doesn’t fall in love with a rosy picture painted for a new alternative. The initial dilemmas would always be same as that of Nandini, but after a positive decision, it is our responsibility to make changes and be fearless.

MBA culture is very different from what the traditional Indian education system offers. It is so much about theoretical concepts but it also so much about using these frameworks to solve a business and real-world problems. However, this just makes up a small percentage of MBA culture, the biggest part is about gaining the most useful insights from resources being provided. Major part of these resources is human resources because in the long run, what matters are the relationships that were built and the networking that we have done. Gaining knowledge is from books, classroom teaching, case studies, real-world scenarios, B-school competitions and projects; however interactions with peers, faculties and people from outside contribute the most in building a knowledge base and a personality. This forms the crux of an MBA program, which is diametrically opposite to that of the objectives of an engineering degree. So much of frankness, the essence of corporate life, hectic schedules and also the stress of giving more than 100% with the fewest possible resources available, probably this is what scares during the change of streams. This is acceptable also, however, who can vouch for the fact that Nandini and Yash would not be that couple who lives happily ever after, unless they give their relationship a shot, there is no way to correctly measure the possible outcome. On the same lines, if the virus of changing streams has already infected someone’s mind, only after pursuing that thought will the worth of that path taken be known.

Nandini and Yash could end up getting divorced or may always have huge difference of opinions or may become that cute, sweet, compatible, worth getting jealous of, in short, the perfect couple. One of these outputs would be true but all of them have different combinations of inputs applied and as a result varying efficiencies. All this could be rectified through different efficiency improving methods, be it an engineering or MBA student, we all are very well versed with doing that. Therefore, the point that could be driven forth is, when a change of stream happens, even if adjusting takes a lot of time, even if it damages a person’s optimism and courage and even if the tunnel looks so dark that moving forward becomes a Herculean task, we have to remember that there is always a way out, maybe carry a torch or a packet of match-sticks to remove the darkness but take a step forward, if you tumble, get up again and if you don’t, take another step forward as:

“Little Drops Make the Mighty Ocean.”
