Choosing to commit a Suicide
Every year, around 1.5 to 2 lakh students go to Kota, Rajasthan, to realize their dream of making into an engineering or medical college. This year, just last month, Tata Institute of Social Sciences released an alarming report containing reasons for students’ suicides. It was one of the most disturbing news for many parents. Especially for those who wanted their children to go to Kota for IIT JEE preparation.
The report revealed, ‘Self-harm, substance abuse, bullying, sexual experimentation and the possibility of pregnancy, sleep-related issues, loneliness, weight loss, acidity, and anxiety which are common among students in Kota’ could be mainly or partially responsible for the same.
The report also came up with a crucial suggestion for parents who aspire to send their children to Kota. The study asked parents to ‘Do an initial recce, if possible, to understand the atmosphere of Kota, to decide if it is right for your children. Kota is not the best place for all children; some find it difficult to adjust to living away from home.’

Some recent Stats on the number of suicides in Kota
As per the police records, the year 2013 to May 2017 saw some 58 student suicides in Kota coaching centers alone. Whereas, between 2011 and 2014, the suicides in Kota due to failure in exams formed the highest percentage in the list of 88 Indian cities considered for IIT-preparations.
According to Times of India the researchers, after taking personal interviews of students, produced the following stats:
- 49% of respondents cited feeling nervous, worried and scared
- 42% told that their friends were nervous, scared and worried
- 39% said they felt easily annoyed or irritable
- 32% said they felt upset or sad for the most part of the day or for many days at a time
This can be a point of serious worry for many parents who want to send their children to a place famous for offering preparatory courses to ‘IIT-hopefuls’ than for preparing ‘suicide victims.’ However, the study has also suggested ways to ease academic stress, such as:
- Class sizes in coaching academies could be cut to a fifth
- Advertisements on exam results could reveal the truth instead of throwing up fantastic numbers
- Recreational activities such as music and dance could be woven into the rigorous competitive exam preparation timetable
- Batches may no longer be segregated based on academic performance
Some suggestions to successfully counter stress
How to have quality fun without Drugs and Alcohol?
What is the main reason for many college students going for drugs or adopting bad drinking habits? It is mainly because of two reasons. They either get influenced by some bad company or have ‘nothing better to do.’ Others try to adopt it as the only solution to stress, emotional or sentimental trauma. Some others are taken in by the misconception that the ‘drugs give the fun,’ while other students are unable to find some other constructive ways of creating fun or having peace.
Unfortunately, the fun that regular use of drugs and alcohol gives wastes an individual’s capacity to normally think and behave with every passing night.
Here are some of the ways that a student can have fun without alcohol or drugs include:
Throw Parties
Throw sober parties, however little they may be. There you can get together with your mates and can watch movies, dance and talk. He or she can even engage in funny and creative activities, which could involve making movies and organizing writing sessions.
Explore the City
You can explore the city, its outskirts, or step into the natural wilderness. Keeping active and exploring new areas will expand your mind and help you appreciate life in a fuller manner. Students in Kota can head to a beautiful wildlife sanctuary called Darrah. The century is just about 50 km from the town of Kota. It is a national park that has large stretches of forests, spreading over an area of 250 sq. km.
Several studies have suggested this kind of therapy as one of the most effective ways of stress buster.
Be with friends with good habits
Try to visit ‘Dhabas’ or restaurants, tea or coffee shops with your friends. Or any other place that doesn’t serve alcohol. It not only creates a feeling of fun but also adds a social experience. It replaces the habit of taking bad drinks to healthy drinks.
Visit places that say no to Drugs
It is better to visit only those places where alcohol and drugs are either not available or allowed. For instance, go to movies or theater. Most of us, regardless of our caste, creed, or ideology, will agree that fun should be healthy in its properties. Many students just like to have a blast sitting around playing cards or chess. For them, there is no space for any alcohol or drugs.
Therefore, it is the student who decides and has to learn how to make his or her own fun. And it entirely depends on the creation of a habit. You may or may not invite or avoid what in the end can kill you or can make your life healthy and long. Nobody wants to embrace death, yet we unknowingly try to go closer to it, by knowingly embracing such unhealthy ways.
What can a student Struggling with Abuse do?
The two proven options for students struggling with abuse are Exploring wilderness and adventure. Even if you read the entire literature dealing with the solutions to recover from it, you will not find better options than these two. The victim of abuse can go out into the wilderness to hike or can even climb mountains. These Rehab experiences help a human mind to naturally cope with the pain successfully.
The student can challenge himself to try new things and experience life to its fullest. If it doesn’t work, a student can go for traditional methods that involve detoxification and psychological counseling by reputed counselors. But the easiest and the best way to forget abuse is by becoming mentally strong and by gaining the confidence to move ahead in life.
There is an endless list of great people who went through it. And that should act as a motivating force for every student who thinks it is a disease that kills what you are.
