IBPS PO Recruitment 2018

The IBPS staffs Probationary Officers and Management Trainees every year via a Common Written Examination (CWE), a.k.a. the IBPS PO exam. The authorities initiated the CWE in 2011 and are holding it for the eighth time this year. Hence, officially, it is named as IBPS PO /MT CWE VIII 2018.The IBPS PO staffing process consists of 3 phases (preliminary, mains and interview). Therefore, the aspirants must pass each of them to move to the next phase. Consequently, mentioned below are the important steps of the IBPS PO Recruitment Process:

Online Preliminary Exam: The IBPS selects a sufficient number of aspirants in each category depending upon the needs for Online Main Examination.

Online Mains Exam: Aspirants must pass the sectional as well as the overall cutoff in the main exam to qualify for an interview.

Interview: The participating organizations, with synchronizations by the nodal bank in each State/ UT along with the help from the IBPS, will conduct the interviews.

Final Result: Finally, the authorities declare the final outcome on the basis of the combined performance of a candidate in IBPS PO 2018 Mains and Interview.

Provisional Allotment: The IBPS makes open the provisional allotment of candidature, for the qualified aspirant, on the official portal. The IBPS allots banks based on the aspirants’ preferences determined at the time of online application.

IBPS plays its role in the selection procedure, only up to the provisional allocation of candidates to different banks. After that, the duty to inform the qualified candidates about their dates of joining and procedure lies with these respective banks.

IBPS PO Exam Pattern

IBPS has made open, the new exam pattern for IBPS PO 2018-19 Exam. As a recent change, now IBPS has introduced individual sectional timing for each section in the preliminary exam. Consequently, the IBPS PO exam (CWE 8) for recruiting candidates will be based on an online written examination in two parts:

  • Firstly, the Tier 1 or IBPS Preliminary Exam and,
  • Secondly, the Tier 2 or IBPS Mains Exam. A face-to-face interview process follows this examination.

IBPS PO Prelims Exam Pattern

Firstly, the total duration for the IBPS PO preliminary exam is of 1 hour and 20 minutes, for each section. Also, the IBPS will hold the Prelims exam via online mode. It contains 3 sections with a total of 100 questions and a maximum score of 100 marks. Moreover, there is negative marking in IBPS PO prelims exam and the authorities subtract 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer. Therefore, the candidates must clear the cut-off in all 3 sections, to pass the IBPS PO Main exam. Consequently, the details of the Main exam, section-wise, are specified below:

S.No. Name of Tests (Objective type) No. of Questions in IBPS PO 2018 Prelims Exam Maximum Marks in IBPS PO 2018 Prelims Exam Time
1 English Language in IBPS PO 2018 Prelims Exam 30 30 20 minutes
2 Numerical Ability in IBPS PO 2018 Prelims Exam 35 35 20 minutes
3 Reasoning Ability in IBPS PO 2018 Prelims Exam 35 35 20 minutes
Total 100 100

Moreover, the candidates need to pass each of the three tests by obtaining minimum cut-off marks. The IBPS will declare these minimum cut-off marks. Subsequently, it will also call the sufficient number of candidates of each category for Online Main Examination.

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern

In the first place, the IBPS holds the IBPS PO Main exam via online mode. It has 5 (= 4+1) sections with a complete score of 200+25 marks. Moreover, the total time is of 180+30 minutes. As in 2017, IBPS will hold a descriptive paper in its mains version of IBPS PO Exam for the hiring of candidates for the post of Probationary Officer. Also, the candidates must attempt the sections of the exam in the same order and within the specified time. The IBPS has mentioned these, at the time of the exam. Finally, a candidate needs to clear both preliminary and mains rounds, to qualify for the process of interview.

S.No. Name of Tests (Objective) No. of Questions in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam Maximum Marks in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam Time
1 Reasoning & Computer Aptitude in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam 45 60 60 minutes
2 English Language in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam 35 40 40 minutes
3 Data Analysis & Interpretation in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam 35 60 45 minutes
4 General Economy & Banking Awareness in IBPS PO 2018 Mains Exam 40 40 35 minutes
Total 155 200 3 Hours
5 English Language (Letter Writing & Essay) 2 25 30 minutes

IBPS PO Interview

Firstly, the IBPS calls the aspirants passing the mains exam for an interview which bears a maximum of 100 marks. Moreover, the minimum passing marks in the interview are 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates).

The round of interview generally lasts for 15-20 minutes. In it, a body of bank officials asks questions to candidates about themselves, the banking sector, general awareness, current affairs etc. Hence, the candidates must be dressed well, confident and bring all necessary documents to the interview.

The authorities prepare the final merit list based on the scores obtained in mains examination and interview. Then the IBPS sums up the final score by totaling. It provides weightage of marks to the main examination and the round of interview, in the ratio of 80:20, respectively.

The penalty for Wrong Answers

There is a punishment for incorrect answers specified in the Objective Tests of both Preliminary and Mains exams. Also, an incorrect answer will lead to a subtraction of one-fourth of the total mark assigned to that question. For example, IBPS will subtract 0.25 marks as the penalty for the incorrect answer to a question that contains 1 mark. But, the IBPS won’t penalize a candidate for not attempting a question. That is, if an aspirant leaves a question unanswered, no deduction of marks shall take place.

Calculating Final Score for IBPS PO Exam

The IBPS computes the final score for the IBPS PO exam, keeping in mind, the following points:

  • Firstly, the IBPS won’t entertain Marks scored in the Preliminary Exam (Tier-1) in the final score. They are only for qualifying for the Mains Exam (Tier-2).
  • Secondly, the candidates must pass the Phase-2 and Interview individually, to become qualified for final merit.
  • Then, the ratio of weightage of CWE Main exam to the interview for preparing final merit list will be 80:20.
  • Finally, IBPS uses the final score of the mains, out of 100, for preparing the ultimate merit list for each category. It also finally chooses the candidates from each category, with top ranks of merits.
